He's only been in jail for 3 weeks. He will likely remain in custody for 3-12 months before going to court.texansteak wrote:Although Im no expert in the police, courts here in Cambodia, one would have to be concerned that the Cambodian authorities are treating this fairly seriously is someone is still being held in jail for such an extended period of time.

Has he officially been charged with a criminal offence yet?Lucky Lucan wrote:He's only been in jail for 3 weeks. RobW I was using the term óne'as a collective generalization and not not actually stating that we should be concerned about Ricketson the person. I personally think he is a very stupid person for criticizing the government so much and is probably starting to realize the enormity of his past doings.RobW wrote:Dwelled on that briefly, but nah.texansteak wrote: one would have to be concerned .

Thanks Marmite for that info. I don't like to criticize others comments because most of the information on this forum is just personal opinion anyway, but I think we all need to be careful when making comments about government related matters and ensure that they are based on fact and not just rhetoric.Marmite wrote:texansteak wrote:Has he officially been charged with a criminal offence yet?Lucky Lucan wrote:He's only been in jail for 3 weeks. Yes. He was charged a couple of weeks ago. The details are all in this thread.
He will be in detention until his trial or pre-trial hearing. Usually that takes around 6-9 months. He is facing charges that could result in a ten year prison term.
He is in deep shit. The charges arepretty bogus and I'm sure the government knows that. It doesn't care, and it feels like they are going to suck up any public or international criticism and just throw the book at him regardless. The Australian government will make the usual platitudes about human rights, tempered by comments about not interfering in another sovereign state's judicial system, and will forget about it, secretly thankful a thorn in their side is out of the picture.
You don't spend decades making a nuisance of yourself and having a personality that would get into an argument in an empty room without it coming back to bite you in the ass, eventually.

How one feels about the lawlessness and arbitrary corruption of Cambodia depends on whether you're a beneficiary of it or not.alifeapart wrote:Really?Loogan wrote:Shows how horrible and vile the atmosphere is in Cambodia.
On the other hand, in my early morning swim, the sky was azure blue and I was thinking how good the atmosphere was. Quite high pressure for the time of year.
