She said she submitted a bail request last week to the municipal court on health grounds, but it was rejected due to the lack of a doctor’s certification confirming Ricketson was in poor health.
Her client, she said, was allowed out of the crowded cell to a room in the prison hospital where he could rest. Ricketson’s translator, who asked to remain anonymous, said the Australian filmmaker has swollen lymph nodes, scabies, a chest infection and has lost weight.

Ricketson's change in state of health is probably no different to anyone else in the same prison.

If he is seriously ill he may well get released. The Cambodians don't really want an Australian political prisoner to die in detention. By the same token Australia cares little for refugees dying in detention. Eight so far I think.
But it is getting a little embarassing and they will probably let 150 go to NZ, after denying them the right to go for years.

Seriously, his "ill health" sounds like he just came back from Spring Break in Florida.

He was granted the 1 month trial delay that he requested. One of the reasons that he asked for the delay was that he only found out last week, "through the grapevine", that he was being charged with espionage. Seriously? That's what this thread has been saying for over a year, as have every single news article about it. Bizarre statement.
His lawyer also wasn't in attendance when it started, and he didn't have a translator. He might want to get on top of that.

I thought it was that he had never had formal charge presented to him and then he heard through the grapevine that is what he would be appearing before court for...even though he still had not been formally charged.

His own son, who moved here to support him, was profiled by the ABC a few weeks ago and it was clear that he knew his dad was arrested on and facing espionage charges. In the same interview he was also talking about the urgency of the process, so to request a delay is strange on all counts.

Sounds like Mr Ricketson senior is either incredibly stupid, incredibly naive, suffering from dementia, or a combination of all three.... it was clear that he knew his dad was arrested on and facing espionage charges

And if his son is here to support him, giving interviews, etc, how can he not ensure that there is a lawyer or interpreter present?epidemiks wrote:His own son, who moved here to support him, was profiled by the ABC a few weeks ago and it was clear that he knew his dad was arrested on and facing espionage charges. I also found it weird that they both keep pressing about the urgency to go to trial, but then request a one month delay.

you missed out narcissist with a persecution complex. This just keeps him looking like the victim he isn't. Either that or he's enjoying hanging out with his pedo pals so much he isn't ready to leave.simon44 wrote:Sounds like Mr Ricketson senior is either incredibly stupid, incredibly naive, suffering from dementia, or a combination of all three.... it was clear that he knew his dad was arrested on and facing espionage charges
https://www.khmertimeskh.com/50510326/l ... m-hun-sen/This letter to Prime Minister Hun Sen was forwarded to Khmer Times by Jesse Ricketson, on behalf of his father James Ricketson who is currently in detention on charges of espionage.
Dear Samdech Techo Prime Minister,
May I please, respectfully, send my sincerest apologies to yourself and the Cambodian Government.
I now realise that my statements I have made in the press and other media are disruptive and ill-informed. These statements were made from a place of foreign naivety and ignorance about the complexities and difficulties of governing Cambodia.
I sincerely regret having made any disrespectful comments and I unreservedly apologise in this regards to yourself and your government.
I can see much more clearly now how much good your government brings to the country and the stability it affords to Cambodians.
I apologise unreservedly and without condition for any distress I may have caused as a result of my ignorance of Cambodian issues. If there is anything I can do to remedy my mistake, please let me know as I only want the best for you and Cambodia.
I thank you in advance for your indulgence and understanding of an uninformed foreigner.
May I wish you well and send you my sincerest respects accordingly.
Yours sincerely,
James Ricketson
