Adapting to Cambodia
Adapting to Cambodia
New here, and I am thinking of relocating to Cambodia perhaps in a few years. As I contemplate this decision, can anyone tell me if adapting to life in Siem Reap or Phnom will be just to difficult for an average Westerner? I am attracted to the cheap cost of living the weather, but I am also depressed and looking to escape my problems by moving somewhere far away from my country. Maybe Cambodia is the answer.

Most expats in Cambodia are depressed or otherwise mentally ill. It's no problem.

The heat was the thing i found hardest. i thought Cambodia was probably about the same as Australia when it came to the heat but boy was i wrong. Cambodia is on a different level. My advice is just pay the extra 50 bucks a month to have your air conditioning on full blast all the time when you are home. The heat is energy sapping here especially during April/May.
If you're depressed and looking to run from your life problems, they will follow you wherever you go and might even worsen in Cambodia if you don't already have or build yourself a support group of solid friends here.HappyBoy wrote:New here, and I am thinking of relocating to Cambodia perhaps in a few years. Cambodia is easy to adapt when your life is not too much of a mess. It can make you or break you though.

Depression is often caused by negative thinking patterns, contrary to the pharma propaganda otherwise. For example, if you envisioned yourself to be a great musician and now live in a hut and nobody likes your music, you may get depressed by internalizing the failure. Or if you are poor you may start thinking that this condition is permanent and you are a failure, et al. Will moving to Cambodia help? Possibly but it depends on what you are running from.
That said, I found learning and continuing to learn the Khmer language to be really liberating in giving me a sense of something beyond my life in the States and a constant sense of renewal.

in a few years all the Barangs will have moved on, as the Chinese invasion will drive everyone out

Worst thing you can do is to think that you can run away from depression and your current problems. You'll still have those problems at the back of your mind and a whole set of new problems....but I am also depressed and looking to escape my problems
At least in 'the West' you can help for your issues - in Asia, you'll likely be on your own to sort them out.
Wonder why there are so many western nutters in Bangkok or Phnom Penh? They thought the same as you.
Sort out your depression, don't rely on pills, face and tackle your current problems. when life looks good, then come for a visit.
How easy is it to network and make friends in Cambodia? I am very introverted and tend to be quiet and keep to myself, but I think I will be forced to be more social if I decide to live in Cambodia. I was thinking of joining Hockey Night in Cambodia and trying to meet people through InterNations.

Problem is a lot of those people are also suffering from depression and have other troubles, most expats are transient and will move out within 18 months to 3 years and the others are a bunch of old grumps roaming discussion forums and Facebook groups.

Do not know anything about hockey here, but the sporty, fitness, types are often found with the Hash House Harriers - running trough the countryside and swilling beers.
I went to an InterNations lunch once, when I left I felt awful, what a wretched, miserable, bunch they were. Never went to another meet up.

If you don't get the meaning of the above, then, no, just forget about Ayuhuasca in Cambodia. No consumption of anything will solve your problems and depression.
