I understand it's akin to being stuck in the fifth circle of Dante's inferno.DF wrote: Is it really that bad being a teacher in Cambodia? Are conditions so harsh and the pay so lousy that you have to jump from the 6th floor. Does not add up for me, although I have never taught at a school in Cambodia.
Exactly my point. All appears very normal with his life in PP, according to his Khmer wife on FB. She states he had a problem accepting events in the past, and had no problems with the present.spitthedog wrote:''Why would a man take his life 15 years after an event with his former wife?''DF wrote:Really. Don't English teachers make like $1,000 a month? If so, then he has hardly has anything to complain about. My friend's coworker lives off $700 with a husband and three kids in kandal province.

I don't know much about ICS, but it's a well -esteemed institution and I would guess that any full-time staff get quite a bit more than that.merchantsmutual wrote:Don't English teachers make like $1,000 a month?
Is your friend's co-worker Cambodian? Do they own or rent? The cost of living is a lot less in the provinces anyway, and Cambodians are much better than we are at being frugal. Besides that westerners tend to live in better-quality (and often over-priced) accommodation, buy more imported foods and get overcharged for many things so they end up needing larger salaries. Until you try living here yourself it won't make much sense, but I work with plenty of Cambodians who earn similar salaries to me, yet they can make their money stretch much further. They have more family support close by and assets like land and property they can capitalize on.merchantsmutual wrote: If so, then he has hardly has anything to complain about. Sure, and whether she is skilled enough to make more than the basic wage is an unknown. I would certainly be concerned about his child's chances from now on, but I would balk at calling him selfish. I'd imagine he was suffering from some major stress or psychological condition and needed help, but ended up choosing a quick route out. You can't rationalize the behavior of someone like that.

Lucky: they are Cambodian and still complain $700 is a bit hard with 3 kids. I agree Cambodians know how to make the money stretch but he had a thrifty Khmer wife to manage the finances so I doubt he had much of an issue

I bet it is, but that's actually a good salary for a graduate or well-skilled worker. There seemed to be a good period in the late 2000s till a few years ago when many people were earning more than ever and things looked promising. In the past few years it seems like rising housing and living costs have made many feel quite a strong discontent with how things are going. While there is a lot more prosperity around it hasn't been all across the board. I feel many Cambodians I talk to are a quite disillusioned, I've seen their optimism for years but it seems to have tailed off for those who felt they were doing well for a while but now find it more of a struggle again.merchantsmutual wrote:Lucky: they are Cambodian and still complain $700 is a bit hard with 3 kids. From aquaintances I understand that the salary at ICS is a bit more than $1000,, but not much.

Someone said selfish.
What a chunt. It's not about money, it's not about previous problems, it's about a man, for whatever reason, has lost the will to live. No suicide thinks he's going to see the repercussions, he want's finality.

^agreed. While I understand the sentiment of a person saying 'you let us down' or 'you broke your promise' ....for god's sake the person likely felt they were letting the family down every day of their life. They likely felt that the family was better off without them.
Fuck all you that judge otherwise. No one reaches the decision to kill themselves and leave behind people they love and who depend on them lightly.

Any man who kills himself for whatever reason and leaves behind a wife and child who were depending on him is selfish. And to do it at a school? Shocking. I dont care if that's insensitive. I see no reason to pander to such bollocks, especially given he appears to have had a track record of taking actions that disrupt other peoples' lives with no consideration to them whatsoever.
Blah blah blah - he was ill. He was depressed. He was down.
We all have problems. We deal with them because we have responsibilities and aren't self-indulgent twats.
