From First World to Third World.
The relatively low cost of living and the favourable visa situation are huge for deciding to live in Cambodia. For these benefits however, it seems that a Westerner has to give up a lot in return. The biggest being enjoying first world living conditions. I stayed in PP for a month a few years ago, and I was taken aback by the extreme poverty, garbage and pollution and overall lack of development. I am just wondering how the longer term expats here coped with the transition to living in Cambodia and how long it took. Is there also a high percentage of expats who just can't adjust to Cambodia and end up going to another Country....

Don't you already have a thread on expats adjusting to Cambodia? I recall you saying you spent your days at Neil's mini mart.HappyBoy wrote: I stayed in PP for a month a few years ago, and I was taken aback by the extreme poverty, garbage and pollution and overall lack of development. You can see so much poverty sitting at Neil's minimart. So much poverty and lack of development in there.
I'm not sure, but this photo may have been taken from the vantage point of Neil's minimart just last month:

I'm a non-alcoholic atheist, but have always found this Serenity Prayer helpful (especially here):
"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference."
Good luck HappyBoy.

Ah bit different for me as I grew up in Africa, so I am not shocked by the poverty or the like. What would be nice to have is better healthcare, things lice nice parks, running trails and generally more things to do on offer. Basically, all the infrastructure that developed countries have.
However, the weather is nice, people are friendly, it is generally safe, booze is cheap. Guess I'll be sticking around.

I had the dim sum brunch at Sofitel on Saturday and the service was atrocious. Never would have happened at a Sofitel property in the West. And there wasn't even a valet, what the hell is that crap?
Quite a lot of development is happening.HappyBoy wrote:The relatively low cost of living and the favourable visa situation are huge for deciding to live in Cambodia. Good accommodation available:
Plenty of good restaurants and wine bars
Unless you are working in development for some NGO or walking around on foot in some of the city's poorer areas you don't really come into contact with much poverty, garbage or pollution. The real hassle now in Phnom Penh is the state of the traffic and the appalling driving. In the last couple of years the population has doubled to around three million.
I have lived in Melbourne before and I found Phnom Penh in some ways similar with respect to the type of accommodation available and the availability of good restaurants and wine bars. But Phnom Penh has a better climate and is considerably cheaper. As I have said previously the downside is the appalling state of the traffic.

Having worked for Sofitel, I would dispute that claim. Sure, service staff are better trained but the high labor costs mean that there is a real shortage of service staff.Miguelito wrote:Never would have happened at a Sofitel property in the West. And would you really entrust your vehicle to a Khmer?

Dudes,
These sort of places above look lovely and shit and no doubt massively increase your chances of getting laid if you take a bird there, but are they not generally terrible for that thing most of us are addicted to in the KOW - People watching. You know, like the weird somewhat fugged up ''what just happened there'' GSM sort of stuff? - .
First world ain't all it's cracked up to be imo. (Unless you have a heart attack or sumting serious etc..)
Just my 2 cents.
Hugs.
