when someone young dies... regardless of circumstances... it's a tragedy.
be it from youthful inexperience, fun fueled adrenaline, devil may care attitude or whatever.
it's a shame.
i did not know the young man but i do know some of his friends that make their home here in kampot.
to label them all as dread locked party animals is wrong.
are all the expats in phnom pehn fat and old whore mongers? no.
kampot is no more a "drug town" than phnom pehn, sihanoukville or siem reap.
we don't have street kids with glue bags stuck to their faces or tuk-tuk drivers ripping you off.
we don't have hostess bars one after another, street after street.
we don't have nouveau rich locals plowing through crowds in their SUV"s.
we do have a small community of well meaning individuals trying to make a home for themselves and their families.
we do try and foster a positive attitude with volunteer group efforts at cleaning the river or using recyclable materials in the restaurants.
have posts been deleted or edited on our little facebook notice board?
yes. why? i guess you should ask them.
it's not anything new though. i have had posts edited here before with out notice. back in the day.
someone died and that sucks.
lets leave it at that o.k.?

i am in Kampot so.......
Dude, it's Cambodia. Of course Kampot is just as dodgy as Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville.Kampot Homesteader wrote:when someone young dies... regardless of circumstances... it's a tragedy.

wow. have not been duded in a while.
and just for the record.... kampot has it's fair share of the dodgy. no doubt.
but just as many as the smoke and snooky??? that's a bit of a stretch.
would make for an interesting K440 poll but the tally results may be a bit suspect.

Relatively to the size of Kampot's population (40,000-50,000?) to Phnom Penh (1,5 million) and Sihanoukville (give or take 90,000), yes, the news coming out of Kampot town make it pretty dodgy.Kampot Homesteader wrote:wow. have not been duded in a while.

You folk seem pretty vigilant in ensuring no negative news escapes Kampot so: Please excuse the majority of this boards users for our biased, whore mongering, PP lifestyles and start to explain why, per capita, more 18-25 yro tourists perish in your town than other cities.Kampot Homesteader wrote:you mean the news that makes it out of Kampot.

As explained, it's a small community of well meaning individuals trying to make a home for themselves and their families.tuk-tukfish wrote:You folk seem pretty vigilant in ensuring no negative news escapes Kampot so: Please excuse the majority of this boards users for our biased, whore mongering, PP lifestyles and start to explain why, per capita, more 18-25 yro tourists perish in your town than other cities.Kampot Homesteader wrote:you mean the news that makes it out of Kampot.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Be fair. Kampot Homesteader has been as critical as anyone of the Kampot Facebook Group admin pulling their 'everything is happy happy happy here in Kampot' routine.tuk-tukfish wrote:You folk seem pretty vigilant in ensuring no negative news escapes Kampot so: Please excuse the majority of this boards users for our biased, whore mongering, PP lifestyles and start to explain why, per capita, more 18-25 yro tourists perish in your town than other cities.Kampot Homesteader wrote:you mean the news that makes it out of Kampot.
Having said that, I still can't understand how that double meth death of two young expats at a party failed to make the news last year. Were it not for it being widely discussed here and CEO, noone would have known about it. Why did the English language media (and UK media) pick up on the rape case and this young lad's accidental death, and ignore that incident?

my guess is as good as yours.tuk-tukfish wrote:You folk seem pretty vigilant in ensuring no negative news escapes Kampot so: Please excuse the majority of this boards users for our biased, whore mongering, PP lifestyles and start to explain why, per capita, more 18-25 yro tourists perish in your town than other cities.Kampot Homesteader wrote:you mean the news that makes it out of Kampot.
perhaps there are slightly more dangerous activities they can involve themselves with. most of the guest houses and bungalows where the young crowd stay are up on the river. there are more late night parties with d.j.'s and such so late night drinking happens. most of us older curmudgeons drink in the afternoons and are home in bed before the parties even start up river.
and... it's a dangerous river. shallow at places (near all the bridges) so a few kids died jumping off the railroad bridge.
we have had our share of fatal moto crashes usually involving less experienced riders. the roads on both sides of the river are pretty nice now so you can actually get some speed up. where in p.p. it's much more congested so the bike spills are less deadly.
there are drugs here, same as elsewhere and that factors in to their safety.
as far as no negative news "escaping" i don't agree with you. i see and hear plenty of it. and the bamboo grapevine usually makes it way up north to the slow death, whore mongerers to beak off about.
good question though... wish there was an answer.
