Cambodia Daily slapped with multimillion dollar tax bill
Sometimes I wish Alexandra wasn't such a nice girl and that she'd use some of her skills to do naughty stuff.
People who speak about themselves in the third person deserve a jolly good rogering.

Sorry I was out on a run and took me a bit to approve this post. Just wanted to make sure people saw it and it didn't get buried on the last page.CDNext wrote:Wouldn't put it past some staff, Khmer or otherwise to mess things up if they could. Signup at the subscription interface is all https at Stripe. No one at the Daily, staff or management, would ever have access to card data as Stripe doesn't pass that through.
Occam's razor says original subscriber has it on autorenew and forgot. It happens. Cleanup will be a minor irritation--reversing a transaction--but nothing more.
Run, jog, walk or stumble?

I don't think it's totally unreasonable for the original subscriber, aware that the CD stopped publishing on September 4, to see the September 18 six month renewal and conclude "This must be fraudulent because surely the CD would have stopped auto-renewing everyone's subscriptions when it stopped publishing."CDNext wrote: Occam's razor says original subscriber has it on autorenew and forgot. Are you still auto-renewing everyone's subscriptions forever unless they cancel under the theory that "Well, maybe they want access to the back issues"?

And an additional question may be, how many subscribers are there that will be affected by this?gavinmac wrote:I don't think it's totally unreasonable for the original subscriber, aware that the CD stopped publishing on September 4, to see the September 18 six month renewal and conclude "This must be fraudulent because surely the CD would have stopped auto-renewing everyone's subscriptions when it stopped publishing."CDNext wrote: Occam's razor says original subscriber has it on autorenew and forgot. Does some Jonny at the Min of Information or whatever it's called have a subscription? That'd be a laugh.

Some forum questions are answered in this article by Julia Wallace. Actually found this article to be a decent read. A bit different to most others.
According to this, tax wasn't paid. Nor was the Daily a registered business or an NGO.

The Daily never addressed the tax questions either, they just tried to sidestep them and divert attention by bringing up irrelevant matters. They could have resolved this if they'd dealt with it differently.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
That's a really good piece by Julia. This is an interesting description of Bernie, especially in the light of all self-promoted goodwill:
BlessHe hired and fired at will, ordered a reporter to break up with his girlfriend, and docked people’s pay for obscure infractions like accidentally sitting in a chair reserved for one of his favorites, who rarely showed up to work. When the local reporters attempted to form a union, he easily broke their resolve by importing new Cambodians from another project he ran.
