I'm surprised they didn't go for that. If the day ever comes that the ruling elite have to answer for their 'alternative' accounting practices they could pull this ace out of their back pocket and claim precedence.Alexandra wrote:Didn't they like Bernie's response? He built schools and stuff.
Bless
But your honor, I have several thousand schools named after me, surely that earns me a pass for the several hundred years of jail time I'm facing?

If the CD had any nuts at all, they should open fire in their last issue with all the stuff they have buried as too dangerous to print...
...some big stuff may hit the papers this week anyway. Tick tock.

I saw in today's issue that they are hiring. Looking for a Cambodian reporter and associate editor.Rama wrote:Bugger. I signed up for a years subscription just before all off this, on August 1st.
Just my luck if they get shut down.
How will this end, with government goons barging in to the offices on September 4 and seizing all the equipment?

Yeah, while I never really liked the Daily as a paper, the obvious pre-election assault on anyone who isn't tiptoeing the party line doesn't make the CPP look any better. What they fail to realize is that despite their quiet demeanor, the younger generation are on to their game and I doubt they'll be putting up with much more of this. I don't even think the father to son plan will work as well as they thinks it will.

Putting up with much more of what, Lexus? Closing down western companies for flouting tax laws?
If the tax issue is correct - and I see nothing in the Daily's own comment refuting it (on the contrary) - then they have been incredibly irresponsible and have given the government the biggest hammer with which to knock them out.
If you are going to be a persistent government critic, that's fair enough. But don't be so stupid as to pocket all the employee tax for a decade or two and hope the authorities turn a blind eye.
It might be politically motivated, but fuck me if the Daily hasn't pulled down its pant, bent over and said 'Go on, go ahead, be my guest' with their questionable financial irregularities.
Slight deviation from topic; the transition from HE to Junior is inevitable; two scenarios I see:
1. CPP get in next election on the back of a normal "us or civil war" campaign - along with some creative election counting skills that suddenly make GDT look like a "competent authority" - Junior assumes the throne in semi-calm circumstances.
2. CNRP win the next election, HE stands aside "graciously" with a final "I warned you...". CNRP run the country into the ground with trademark Rainsy incompetence & regional dissent from CPP commune die-hards for 3-6m before there is a military coup to "rescue" the country (oh the irony) and Junior is established as de facto (& landslide popular) saviour & leader for another half-century.
SE Asia loves a good military coup, followed by "Same, Same, but us instead"

My point is simple Loogan. If you are going to spend a decade a two taking a pop at what is essentially a quasi-dictatorship which has been reluctant in the past to crack down on the western press in the same way it has cracked down on the domestic press, then you better make sure everything about your operation is squeaky clean, or you are inviting the attack.
Is it fair what's happening to them? No. Not particularly. But if the allegation is true, then they have been ridiculously naive and have shot themselves in the foot.
I'm getting sick of seeing the likes of Colin Meyn and the other western journalist luvvies wailing about 'a death sentence on the media' on Twatter. Not one of them has questioned the Daily's shonky financial practices that has gifted the authorities this scalp.

Probably because they didn't pay their salary taxes themselves...Marmite wrote:My point is simple Loogan. Although, if the Government is going to be serious about chasing tax-dodgers, I do expect tax collectors to go after big Cambodian businesses as well as they did with Nagacorp.
The precious luvvies from the Daily are playing a blinder on Twitter. Every one of them - the new editor, other journalists like Ben Paviour plus all their supporters like Holly Robertson etc - seem to think a good strategy is to launch a Twitter offensive to shame the government to back down. Paviour is even going so far as initimating that HE is a thief, and posting obscure sub-clauses of minor legislation to show that they tax dude's statements 'broke the law'.
Seriously - how long have these snowflakes been in Cambodia? Kevin Doyle is tweeting that the government needs to think of the reputational damage it will do to itself by closing the Daily down?
It's like they have never been to Cambodia - do they really think the authorities will give a toss what tiny group of Bassac Lane habitees will say?
On the contrary. This is now personal. HE today commented on it; there is no way the Daily survives now.
Had they just shut the fuck up, dealt with it behind the scenes instead of doing what comes to natural to them - turn it into a cause celebre - they might have kept their jobs.
Not now.

Oh don't get me wrong. As per my previous comments, there will be no tears lost by me. As you say, they should hve had their ducks lined up in a row all this time. However, what I meant is that even IF their papers had been spotless, they could have been taken down for some other reason (defamation etc). That's the whole point: the laws only affect those they want it to, and people are getting fed up. CD was in the wrong and i haven't heard many good things about Bernie, but say what you will about them, it's obvious that there's a renewed targeted elimination of opponents. Nothing new, of course, but VOA is the next in their crosshairs and more to follow. At some point people will push back, so they have to be careful.Marmite wrote:LexusSchmexus wrote:Yeah, while I never really liked the Daily as a paper, the obvious pre-election assault on anyone who isn't tiptoeing the party line doesn't make the CPP look any better. I see this option as a distinct possibility as well:Spigzy wrote:Slight deviation from topic; the transition from HE to Junior is inevitable; two scenarios I see:

3. CPP wins the election just barely after an encore of the last elections (protests). They win by a tiny or not-so-tiny margin after a heated and obviously one-sided battle given the power of the state's apparatus is in one party's hands. Bit of uneasiness and civil unrest, but everything is still fairly calm. HE steps down for "health reasons", CPP elects a new party leader and voila, New Kid on the Block is in.

How do you "deal with it behind the scenes" other than paying millions of dollars or selling out like Agape and agreeing not to post critical content about the regime?Marmite wrote:
