RGC boots NDI out of Cambodia
In a nutshell, the announcement by the MFAIC explains that NDI had not registered with MFAIC until 21 June 2016, when it submitted an application to get registered with MFAIC. In the meantime and pending any decision from MFAIC, NDI continued its activities.
In addition, the MFAIC alleges that NDI has not complied with the Law on Taxation by not registering with the tax administration.

Of course, in the papers outside of Cambodia they report that the NDI is being expelled because it was caught giving training and advice to members of the CNRP.

Apparently it was training members of all parties. I would imagine there was quite a bit of discrepancy between what they said they were doing and their actual mission.monomial wrote:Of course, in the papers outside of Cambodia they report that the NDI is being expelled because it was caught giving training and advice to members of the CNRP.

Aren't shutting down NGOs and expelling their staff two different issues? What's the basis for expelling a former staff member from a closed NGO who otherwise has a valid visa?

It is possible that the NGO workers were on G Visas, as NGO employees. If the NGO ceases to exist, I guess the visa becomes invalid ?gavinmac wrote:Aren't shutting down NGOs and expelling their staff two different issues? What sort of visas do Cambodia Daily reporters have? Would they be "expelled" also if the paper is shut?Playboy wrote:It is possible that the NGO workers were on G Visas, as NGO employees. Damned if I know what visas they have, probably the ordinary visa (former business visa).gavinmac wrote:What sort of visas do Cambodia Daily reporters have? The NDI is being shut down because it's alleged they were providing training to CNRP - in other words, unfairly providing support to one party over another. The authorities will argue that NDI staff are complicit in that, and can be booted out.gavinmac wrote:Aren't shutting down NGOs and expelling their staff two different issues? The Daily issue is different - the STATED alleged offence is financial, not political.
In my view, issues like this all bubbling up at the same time is why the WP issue is more serious than many suppose. When you start to see issues around NDI and the Daily at the same time as government media outlets accusing foreigners of being spies (Ricketson and the guy yesterday), then take into account the breakdown of relations with the west (cf the recent US visa crackdown around returnees), and all of this happening at a time when the ruling party seems genuinely nervy about its longevity, then you start to see an entirely new dynamic at play.
I could be wrong. I usually am.
