Reports of major change to visa laws imminent
I doubt a freelancer visa will ever happen. Even if it does - you think they are not going to want a slice of your income by way of contributing to / paying local tax ?

Unreal. Called embassy in Washington for laughs. Might as well have been for laughs.
In garbled indistinguishable babble-talk I think I heard "no retirement visa."
A couple more minutes of laboured questioning produced nothing more. Sounded like he was on VOIP.

Rumour is that freelancers will need to show bank statements of enough money to support yourself regularly going into account for 3 mth period prior to applcation for visa eos

Why don't they just do a long term 24 month visa ( for retirees / freelancers / those searching for jobs etc ) for $600 with the only stipulation that you need to maintain USD$20k in a "bond" or some such similar to what they do in Thailand. That would weed out alot of muppets whilst also ensuring people were no burden in the event of a fuck up.

Because some jolly fine people would be affected. Artists for example tend not to have loads of dosh but they have plenty of positive to contribute to the country, and have done so. Because some right selfish and/or sociopathic people come with money and may have a negative impact on the country.
Just a couple of thoughts.

Following the Thai model for retirement visas would be the easiest path.ricecakes wrote:Why don't they just do a long term 24 month visa ( for retirees / freelancers / those searching for jobs etc ) for $600 with the only stipulation that you need to maintain USD$20k in a "bond" or some such similar to what they do in Thailand. If you meet the age requirement and deposit Bt800k in a Thai Bank it covers self funded retirees without pensions.
You might be dreaming to think a similar deal could happen for freelancers/job seekers.

If you're not working and meet the financial requirements, then age isnt a big factor imo.Baconroll wrote:I know people who retired in their forties ...because they were financially able to do sooffroadscholar wrote:Following the Thai model for retirement visas would be the easiest path.ricecakes wrote:Why don't they just do a long term 24 month visa ( for retirees / freelancers / those searching for jobs etc ) for $600 with the only stipulation that you need to maintain USD$20k in a "bond" or some such similar to what they do in Thailand. Maybe the gov thinks that setting an age limit filters out would be scammers of the system, whereas if you're 55+ its more likely that you're genuinely retired.
Id be happy to pitch up good money for a one time application permanent spousal visa with no ongoing requirements that allowed me to live/work/retire/ whatever I wanted.
Wife's Australian one cost me $7k.

I browsed the FB expats visa group once. It was like this thread but 200 times worse!
I won't be going there again. (In fact I stay away from all the FB groups for people to talk shite. Just use the for sale ones, and even they get idiots.)
