Koh Rong.... an accurate description?
Saw this on a Facebook page entitled: Where's the worst place in Southeast Asia you have ever been.
I found it pretty funny & quite accurate!
The island of Koh Rong, off Sihanoukville, Cambodia. I got the impression that a large majority of people on the island, mostly from the U.K, genuinely thought they had stumbled across some kind of secret utopia, and were living a real life version of the film “The Beach”, despite the fact it is in every travel guide going.
The ex public school boys running the guesthouses were very cool and cliquey, and took pride in loudly shouting stupid nicknames at each other, the kind you would expect to hear at a university rugby match. This hilarious banter was only interrupted when the next funnel was loaded up, ready for “Smudger” to get down his gullet.
When the above crowd rolled out of bed hungover at 3pm, they would decide to give something back to the community, and decide to wash a local feral dog, which consisted of carrying one and dumping it into the sea for 10 seconds. This was only done whilst plenty of people were watching of course, and much chortling and back slapping would ensue.
Most people I met, dickhead or otherwise, would have tales of being sick during their stay on the island. This same fate was bestowed on me, although I am not surprised, as the almost complete lack of sanitation would mean sewage was visibly pumped into the sea, which probably explains the constant murkiness of it.
The much vaunted “raves” which happened every few days, which I seem to recall took place on somewhere called Police Beach, would consist of about 20 people sat around drinking shitty cans of Klang beer, with not a soul up and dancing to the crap deep house coming out of speakers no louder than a minirig.
People say Sihanoukville is a shit hole, and whilst the pervs and knife wielding crackheads are quite off putting, getting off the boat from Koh Rong and back on dry land, I felt a wave of happiness and relief.

I have only been to Koh Rong once for a three night stay.............and I loved the place. We stayed at the end of the beach where it was quiet, and could walk into "town" if we felt like it. I would rate it among the best beach destinations in the world. What I loved about it...was the fact that there were no cars, no suit sellers, and not much of the other assorted bullshit you see at any beach destination in the world. There was a young crowd at the other end of the beach...but that did not cause me any irritation.
The water and beach were beautiful, it is a perfect beach for children/families....and I could do what I love to do on beach holidays......not much of anything.

Let's hope biloeboy/hotdogger doesn't read that..... He frothed at the mouth when anyone criticised Shitsville, now the island is home, he'll defend it's honor.....

Is calling people "ex public school boys" an insult in the UK? We don't have that in the USA. Even people who went to private schools don't go around casting aspersions on those who went to public schools.
Follow my lame Twitter feed: @gavin_mac
Public school boys are often from monied families and have spent their younger years being rogered at boys schools/convents.
Eton, Winchester and Harrow spring to mind. You can spot them a mile away.
The boys all play rugby have perfect hair and hot girlfriends. All gay. (Nothing wrong with that it's just the denial that's laughable).
Normal universities are ok. Cambridge, Oxford etc but you'll still get the group of wannabe posh twats with their scarves and Brogues.

GM, in the UK 'Public Schools' are not public, they are fee paying institutions, like your private schools in the US.

"We, the sons of John Company, have arrived"
So a backpacker arrives in Koh Toch village by boat. Does not venture further than Koh Toch Beach, and labels the 76 sq km Koh Rong Island as the worst in SE Asia. Sounds like a very trustworthy travel blogger to me.
Koh Toch area is the original Khmer fishing village where the backpackers first flocked to. A Khmer family living off the land just defacated in a field. As was tradition and as is tradition. This whole stretch of beach is ruined, and has been for years. There is talk of moving all structures up the hill from the beach. Start from scratch. Build new dwellings with septic tanks.
Venture around the corner and you have K4 beach. A fantastic stretch of sand. Next to Coconut Beach. Next to Kong Beach. Next to... and so on and do forth the whole way around the island. Just fantastic beaches.
Real travel bloggers know to avoid the Koh Toch and Police Beach areas.

This. The main area described above is very easily avoidable - you could even walk ten minutes to Pura Vida beach and feel like you're in another world.DF wrote:So a backpacker arrives in Koh Toch village by boat. The UK is a heavily stratified society, so you do hear stuff like that from Brits all the time. Remember that this is a place that still had a House of Lords and a (German) Royal Family...
I went to Koh Rong for the first time early this year and think it's perfectly accurate. I'd been to KRSamloeun several times over the years, but for some reason had always avoided KR because of its reputation as a backpacker hangout. Anyways, I did find it dirty and disgusting. Even water in remote spots has plastic and stuff like that. The main drag had the least friendly Cambodians I've ever met and the dirtiest restaurants ever. Then of course there's the sewage spilling out on the sand, plastic everywhere. The place is a total shithole, and that's before you get to the people...
When you venture further out (obviously a must) it's still not great imo. Too many Khmer settlers/squatters, too many visitors and so on. At this point it'll only be nice once it's fully developed into some kind of Koh Chang/Phu Quoc as they've passed the tipping point long ago in terms of pristine nature and remoteness.
For the record, I hate beaches in general so it's only normal that I would hate the place as well. KRSamloeun is almost just as bad now. I don't think I'll be going back to either again I think KR is a shit show while my memory of KRSamloeun has now been poisoned.
Anyways, the report is definitely funny because for some reason, the exact same type of people seem to gravitate to beaches all over the world (well, I'm SEA and SA anyways). It's like they all have the same personality, so it feels like you're interacting with the same person/automaton over and over again.
