Exnet scams
When you look at the aps and the prices, convenience (when they work), etc, how will tuk tuks survive? Do you think they'll end up lowering prices at some point, or stubbornly stick to their bloated prices? Will they become like they are in Bangkok, just for the most oblivious of tourists?

If anybody is screwing my Alexandra over, under, sideways or down, it's me, right.
There are more and more of those TukTuk-meters that advertise KHR1,200 per km, which is a pretty good fare. They are using Pass App and Go711 or something app. I never tried to book one though so i don't know whether they would renege on their published fares.amirite wrote:When you look at the aps and the prices, convenience (when they work), etc, how will tuk tuks survive? I have found 711 drivers to be very good guys. Sometimes they have trouble finding me from the map but always good with the fare.
Actually, this is not always the case in Bangkok. Tuktuks not hanging outside the hotels and tourist traps can be priced quite reasonably, especially when used by locals of course. I suspect the same polarisation of tuktuks will occur in PP, it already happens but it will accelerate. But I do think the apps are a game-changer, because they enable newly arrived tourists to instantly access good value taxis and tuktuks. Locals are resistant to using them, in my experience, so tutktuks may find they lose tourists and expats but continue to have locals as customers. That will mean their income per km will decline substantially (as will their overall customer numbers). A further benefit of the apps is they enable pickups at any place so drivers are not spending half of their time and fuel returning to base. This will encourage drivers to start using the apps because they can earn the same money even though their fares are lower. Drivers who prefer to hang outside hotels playing cards most of the day, waiting for a juicy tourist fare will not convert.amirite wrote:When you look at the aps and the prices, convenience (when they work), etc, how will tuk tuks survive? Another game-changer for PP will be the public buses. Once the new routes settle down and reliability and frequency improves, more tourists (and even locals) will use them.
Not a good time to be a tuktuk driver.
Yes. Good for cars and tuktuks. The only one of the apps that I would hesitate (and I mean only hesitate) to recommend is Uber (see the relevant thread).chkwoot wrote:Anyone use iTSUMO?

Itsumo works well. The bajaj tuk tuks are way cheaper than regular ones, although obviously smaller inside. The 'small car' option has delivered us a Lexus, so no complaints there and still on par with or slightly cheaper than what a regular tuk tuk would expect.
Only issue is that the app seems to have some glitches and causes my (android) phone to crash sometimes. However on my flatmate's iphone he can see all nearby drivers on the map. I only see the driver who agreed to the fare as he approaches.
We did have an issue trying to get an iTsumo tuk tuk to pick us up at a bar. He couldn't find us, and clicked to say the journey was underway. So then my phone stated the journey has commenced. I was able to call him to get him to come to a nearby corner, but then we had to go through the app ordering process all over again stood right next to him. He wouldnt take the previously agreed fare outside the app. That was just a one off, but otherwise I'm a regular user and happy with the service.

Thanks QED and purple_turtle. I'll try iTSUMO.
I too have had experiences with exnet similar to Alexandra's, and have gone back to using cheaper tuk-tuks. It would be sad to see a well functioning app fail because of scamming sub-contractors. Consistent, fair customer service is a critical factor in a business like this. For many, it's more important than the cost.

Have you tried emailing Exnet about the problem? They reply quickly and efficiently. If they deal with errant drivers, then the community will benefit.chkwoot wrote:Thanks QED and purple_turtle. I'll try iTSUMO.

That would be easier to do if they didn't immediately give your number to the driver. The last thing I need is an angry unemployed driver who knows my number and where I live and thinks he lost his job because of me. I don't trust whoever Exnet employs to deal with complaints to not say something along the lines of: the customer that you drove yesterday from X to Y thinks you're a piece of shit.QED wrote:Have you tried emailing Exnet about the problem? There is no need for the driver to have any personal info about the customer. It just results in stupid calls like "hello you order taxi?".

Yes, I did 2 or 3 times. Exnet responded quickly and politely, and even gave me a $1 discount on each next trip (which the drivers bitched about to my wife in Khmer, after also trying some of the previously mentioned scams). The company's responses were good, but had no effect upon the drivers' service. In fact, it got worse. Our last trip using them was so fucked up, I emailed them about it and explained why I was uninstalling the app. Didn't get a reply to that one. Oh well.QED wrote:Have you tried emailing Exnet about the problem? They reply quickly and efficiently. Good luck to Uber and the like. This society isn't going to change their centuries held mores, values, and logic overnight.

^exactly this! And I will not use any car service here that would require me to use a credit card.Alexandra wrote:That would be easier to do if they didn't immediately give your number to the driver.
