CEO statement on the closing of RFA’s Phnom Penh Bureau
September 12, 2017

In recent days, the intimidation campaign by Cambodia’s government against free speech has intensified. As a result, and out of concern for the security and safety of its journalists, Radio Free Asia (RFA) has made the difficult decision to suspend operations of its news bureau in Phnom Penh.
In this interconnected age of borderless news and information, the Broadcasting Board of Governors is committed to achieving our mission of informing, engaging, and connecting people around the world in support of freedom and democracy. There has never been a more important time to hold governments accountable for treating press freedom as a human right and a universal priority. The Cambodian government’s actions have only strengthened our resolve to continue to respond to threats and harassment with accurate, factual reporting, analysis, and other vital information.
We condemn this crackdown and again call on the Cambodian authorities to permit journalists to do their important work in safe, unfettered conditions; and to allow the programs of BBG networks back onto FM stations in the country.
We salute the dedication and determination of the journalists of RFA, and independent media outlets in Cambodia who provide much-needed news and information to audiences eager for the truth."

Fixed that for you.In recent days, the intimidation campaign by Cambodia’s government against US soft power has intensified.
I sincerely hope you have an opportunity to live under a People's Republic regime Ms Alexandra and Mr Starkmonster, since you seem to despise the current Pax Americana.
Aussies are particularly advantaged in terms of low budget self defense due to the lease on Pine Gap- making then the second in line for incoming. MAD doctrine equals economic advantage for Bogans.
Of course- China would be careful to not irradiate their own assets unduly, which amount to around 1/3rd of the island now.
Trump is a very big tell on how fucked the USA is as well as their crumbling infrastructure.
There may be no way back from the brink of Chinese hegemony in the near future.

RFA have been broadcasting their propaganda here since way back when they supported the Coalition Government of Democratic Kampuchea. They may have lightened their tone since but that's only because the situation on the ground has changed. Goodbye and good riddance.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Western powers stirring up dissension via am radio? Did we get transported back to Eastern Europe circa 1968?

Radios might have fallen out of use in the west but are still a big thing in developing countries. It wasn't until very recently that there was much internet penetration here, and television tends to be focused on entertainment and is still rare enough in the boonies. RFA broadcast here all through the 80's from their stations in Thailand and are still broadcasting here from abroad. I wouldn't underestimate the power of radio just yet.Edwardo wrote:Western powers stirring up dissension via am radio? Did we get transported back to Eastern Europe circa 1968?
http://www.govexec.com/magazine/1999/05 ... news/6021/In 1999, Catharin Dalpino of the Brookings Institution, who served in the Clinton State Department as a deputy assistant secretary deputy for human rights, called Radio Free Asia "a waste of money." "Wherever we feel there is an ideological enemy, we're going to have a Radio Free Something," she says. Dalpino said she has reviewed scripts of Radio Free Asia's broadcasts and views the station's reporting as unbalanced. "They lean very heavily on reports by and about dissidents in exile. It doesn't sound like reporting about what's going on in a country. Often, it reads like a textbook on democracy, which is fine, but even to an American it's rather propagandistic."

Yeah I know such things are still broadcasting in many places due to outdated western intelligence propaganda doctrine, I just question how many Cambodians are actually listening to their message at this point.Lucky Lucan wrote:Radios might have fallen out of use in the west but are still a big thing in developing countries. It wasn't until very recently that there was much internet penetration here, and television tends to be directed at entertainment and is still rare enough in the boonies. There is no CCTV Radio (well it goes without saying, TV means television), but at least what there is never plays Nickleback.
