That's odd. I believe we have established the following:
One cough "Put all your valuables in the door side pocket."
Two coughs "What's your PIN number?"
Three coughs "I'm ready to have acid thrown in my face."
Four coughs "Hey are you a teacher?"
Five coughs "Whereabouts should we drop you off?"
Six coughs "Please rate me 5 stars bong"
Seven coughs "Shhush"

By the way, I think Logos told a story a few years ago that he went out for a walk and three young Khner men kind of circled him and a Logos immediately handed over his watch, no words spoken there either.

Not quite an encirclement. A trianglement maybe.gavinmac wrote:By the way, I think Logos told a story a few years ago that he went out for a walk and three young Khmer men kind of circled him.
Did they cough at him? How many times?gavinmac wrote:Logos immediately handed over his watch, no words spoken there either.

Anyone who doesn't like Capitalism is a pathetic loser. God bless the USA and no place else.
Violet,
I'm sorry this happened to you and hope you're ok. You've gotten some nice responses and some predictably stupid ones, which I assume you expected. A lot of this story is confusing but I chalk that up to your memory and the overall weirdness of the situation. Couple of things:
1. I think they were trying to make you think they were kidnapping you, and scare you into complying with them. And I assume that's what you thought. I don't think they had chest colds and you mistakenly started throwing money and jewelry at them.
2. When police/detectives/etc are assessing stories, the ones that are air tight and crystal clear and make perfect sense and never change are the most suspect. Human memory doesn't work that way, it's cloudy and faulty and it fills in blanks by nature.
3. A lot of the taxi people's actions made no sense, but since when has that been a reason to doubt a story. This forum is filled with stories about the 'wacky stuff the locals do', it's literally like the sub-heading of this whole site. For all those doubters to all of a sudden say 'Why this story can't be true, it simply defies reason!' is beyond ridiculous, especially when they routinely post stories about the logic-defying, crazy thing they just witnessed a local doing.
4. You should look into counseling if you think you have trauma, it helps a lot. Good luck.

My friend and I were on a cruise which had a port of call in Jamaica. We had done our research for what we wanted to see that day, and we walked off and negotiated a 'taxi' outside of the compound.
Immediately he was trying to sell us weed and girls. We said, no, its fine, we just want to go to 'that' place. Eventually, he told us he would need more money, and we felt we were being extorted and in danger of being held and missing the ship if we didn't get back in time.
After some harsh talking we told him in no uncertain terms we were not paying more and to just take us back to the ship or let us out right there.
Although it turned out ok, in retrospect, it might not have. It was a bit unnerving, and we were lucky.
Taxi or not, getting onto a car with any stranger can be a risk. I was younger and hitchhiking and was picked up by a native indian, who was drunk and driving erratically. If that was not bad enough, he then pulled out a gun and put it on the dash. He had no malice directed against me however, but I was scared shitless and asked to be let off at the next turn.
Girls are not the only vulnerable; when you're a young cute boy. I was 19 and hitchhiking, and some guy picked me up and said he could take me all the way to my town but would have to stop at his house first. He was friendly enough and invited me in. He had to change out of his work clothes, it was a Friday night and he was also going to town. Well, he seemed to be making quite a display of his changing, I got spooked and realised how stupid of a situation this was and told him I would wait outside. I also was in the middle of nowhere and did get back in the car with him.
All's well that ends well.

Long time lurker, might as well write a post
Last story reminded me of first time in Phnom Penh
Was traveling alone, and wanted to go to shooting range to blow of some steam. Some random tuktuk driver said he knew the guys running it, so I agreed to go with him the next day. He picked me up the day after in a Landcruiser with 3 other guys in it and off we go. I had already said I wanted to shoot the RPG, AK47 and some other guns, so they knew I had lots of cash on me (5-600+USD) Was a bit nervous, as no one would miss me for many days, but was in adventure mode. Around 2 ours out of town we drive in to the jungle and get to a military compound of some sorts, and the guns get loaded into to a pickup and more guys went with us to a shooting range. So there I was, a very white and lonely Norwegian with pockets full of cash, far into the jungle with 6-7 strangers and enough guns to start a guerrilla war. But all went well, I got to shoot everything I wanted and got home safe.
Only "shady" thing is when we stop for dinner on the way back they wanted me to pay for everyone. I didn't invite his friends so I said I will only pay for me and driver, went ok.
Also went through the Poipet border scams, but luckily I met some Spanish dudes and shared a taxi to SR with them.
I could have been robbed so many times in my life, night time pirate taxi alone in Kiev and Egypt, wandering around PP/BKK alone at 4AM, and even went to a full compound drug dealer in Sihanoukville in the middle of the night. (I don't use drugs anymore)
All went well, but it didn't need to. It's a balance between staying safe, but also allow yourself some adventures. I'm not a big guy, but I think it's important to "walk with confidence", not appear like a victim, and a healthy dose of "street smartness" But I also understand it's different if you are a woman...
Like the above said, all's well that ends well

Yes,many years ago,i think mid to late 70s,i was straight out of the army and landed a job working afternoon/night shifts at a warehouse in Redfern in Sydneys inner suburb.now redfern had a quite bad reputation and taxis would not enter after dark so getting home after work meant i had to walk about 30 mins to Central Station.to catch a train.not even the trains would stop at Redfern Station after a certain time,it was full of non white people that loved to drink hard and play harder, back in those days it was a very poor suburb and even the police would not enter after 8pm.on the positive side when in the 70s the unemployment rate was 10% and having the army trying to tell me to sign up for another 6 years on the advise there where no jobs out there,i was pleasantly surprised to be able to walk straight into this job:)
But walking to the station every night after work.i could feel my heart beating so hard and tensing my whole body, after the first night i decided i needed to carry a knife,i hate knifes but it could be used as a last resort.i walked quickly but not too quick, walked with confidence,,walked in the middle of the road(no cars at night)least i could see the bastards come at me,the footpaths where full of small gangs of young guys yelling out,i just never looked at them nor answered just be ready for whatever will happen.of course nothing ever did really happen to me but i was also fit back than and was a great runner so i think my first line of defense would have been legging it,its never one on one (fighting)so standing your ground would be risky at the very least.

Please don't take my reaction personally, Dear Violet. I dare say that you had what one might call an Adela Quested moment, albeit one that lasted all day.
In fact, with a decent introduction, and some development towards the end - involving the cops and a dramatic courtroom final scene - we have the making of a modern day remake of E.M.Forster's classic novel.

I hear ya, I have never been robbed, but I am always on guard. Last 3 months in the KOW, I had over my shoulder, my bag with $5000+ USD, Passport, Visa, and Laptop amongst other important things. My thinking was that the bag was safer with me always than laying around in the apartment.HaramBarang wrote:Long time lurker, might as well write a post

hehe, I had a deal I was making for a business, I paid dearly in exchange too; however, it went south, and I was kind of stuck with it at that point.
No offence, but I have no inclination to ever sit and drink in this stink. Whats the point of that?
