I took a trip to socal recently to visit a friend and went. They say ignorance is bliss because I went around 8 pm on a thursday and never felt unsafe. I walked up and down the main street (Cherry iirc). There were a few drunks and a homeless guy but really nothing worse than the bronx.
I tried apsara cafe and thought the food was basically what I ate in Cambodia, meaning it was very good and authentic. I asked the server whether there was anything to see and she said it was too late. She said on the weekends there are more people.
The whole area kind of disappointed me, especially compared to philadelphia khmertown which was more compact and slightly more bustling. It is also nowhere near as bustling as the other socal ethnic enclaves like little saigon, parts of irvine, et al. I also think that because of the ridic property prices now and the fact that khmer immigration is not what it was once, the area has seen its heyday. Maybe it was better in 1984 or something.
