Backpack snatched - report to police??
Backpack snatched - report to police??
I was in a tuk-tuk on the way to the airport and a fast moto came beside and snatched my backpack from the floor near my legs. Happened near Royal Hospital.
I got no licence plate info an no real description of the 2 young guys on the moto. There was a laptop and some other small electronics inside and some financial info {accounts have already been frozen or stopped].
Does it pay to contact the police? If so, at what station?

Unless you are planning to claim on insurance I wouldn’t bother.
It’ll cost you to make a report with the police, then in the unlikely event they find your bag it’ll cost you again to get it back.

More like a national pastime. What possible good would he achieve by reporting it? Right.
No. Unless you are curious to see how the police system works (or doesn't work) here.

What about all those photos we see in the paper of police officers handing stolen handbags back to tourists?patcan wrote:No. Unless you are curious to see how the police system works (or doesn't work) here.

I would say probably they were recovered at or near the scene. Doubt that many were the result of diligent police footwork and investigation.

Add the cost of missing your flight/inconvenience as well.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:Unless you are planning to claim on insurance I wouldn’t bother.

Never mind.
Later I discovered that I had no insurance for the lost items I may have insurance for the missed fight caused by crime from the credit card I used to buy the air ticket. So I decided to file a police report. I was directed to go out to the police station in the sangat where the crime happened. Went out w my gf on her moto and she found it - i certainly could not have.
It was this small building from the French era. In the courtyard, half outdoors, most amusingly, were stacks of paper files in folders tied up w heavy string that looked like they were last disturbed well before Fats Domino played his first note. The cop who took the report was a pleasant low key sopheap guy about 30-35 years old who spoke no English. My gf translated for me and he very carefully enquirered about the details, hand wrote out the report, copied it and had me sign it with my fingerprint. He gave me one copy. My gf suggested that I should give him some money for his trouble - I did, 7500 reil.
As we were leaving i asked her to ask him if she could take his pic w me. He was happy to do so.

I don't understand how theft of the credit card used to buy the flight ticket would cause you to miss the flight. Did you get a refund and/or buy a new ticket? I don't know that there is insurance for this.

I don’t think it was “theft of the credit card” itself, it was just that the card’s insurance protected against loss of the fight due to crime (having to file the report).gavinmac wrote:I don't understand how theft of the credit card used to buy the flight ticket would cause you to miss the flight. Sounds like a great card. Jamie must be informed right away about that unique cover.Miguelito wrote:I don’t think it was “theft of the credit card” itself, it was just that the card’s insurance protected against loss of the fight due to crime (having to file the report)
