The other day I was stopped by the police after making a right hand turn at an intersection. Fair enough, that is legal in the US and several countries, but it's also not allowed in most of Europe (without a sign) and several other countries. It's just annoying that they choose that one rule to stop and fine people on, when I witness something absurdly illegal (or should be) every few seconds when I'm driving. Anyways, I negotiated the money down from 50,000 riel to 8,000.
So today I was a good chap, and waited patiently, and turned at the proper time. Guess what happened next! WHAM. Ummm, yes? Apparently I couldn't turn right at all at that intersection. WTF? Here's where I was, by Olympic Stadium:
What gives? I mean, this time I just argued until they got bored with me and I drove off, but seriously, what the fuck?
Turning right
You are supposed to turn right earlier and go round the back of the wat.amirite wrote:The other day I was stopped by the police after making a right hand turn at an intersection. Are you inquiring about the driving rule in Cambodia? Forget it man. If they are out to get you it means business. There is a one way road on the Old Market in Siem Reap, they purposely leave out the sign makes you think its a 2 way road. Its a massive money making machine, they used to do it often but only once or twice a week these days whenever they get the green light from the boss cop its a guaranteed jackpot.
In general, never turn right on red in Cambodia. When the police want your money, they will find whatever reason they can and there is no debate. If you see them flag you down, do what any good barang would do: rev the engine and swerve around them. See ya later.
Cantankerous Curmudgeon
I was booked there years ago, but for driving the wrong way on the block before the intersection, instead of turning right and bypassing it. When I asked them to show me the sign that indicated that the last block was one way, they showed me a small sign set well back from the road and almost entirely obscured by advertising hoardings and other pavement junk.
At the time, I only had a $100 note on me, so they held my driver's licence until I changed the bill and returned with the required $10 bribe. Just another sleazy, money-making scam.

I drove by this intersection the other day. I certainly didn't see any sign that said you couldn't turn right. There was a sign that said no left turn, and then painting on the road with an arrow showing that you can indeed turn right.
I've taken that right a bunch, so maybe they just saw that you were white and thought they'd get a quick buck?

The Armenian-Spanish gives me a bit of a Bruno Mars complexion which fools them enough until I have room to blast past. The third man wrote:They can't place vatos like you yet, enjoy it while it lasts.I've taken that right a bunch, so maybe they just saw that you were white and thought they'd get a quick buck?
