Expat thoughts....
Let’s do this.
Thoughts on the recent political changes,
The legally abolishing of an opposition party.
Hun Sen is a force to be reckoned with.

An American friend of mine who lives in Cambodia tells me she recently flew into Cambodia on her one year visa and was asked two questions at immigration:sociopath wrote:my only thought would be keep your nose out of it

"Do you work here?"
"Do you work for an NGO?"

I've lived in 5 countries to this point, including a 5 year stint in Saudi Arabia (openly atheist, too, which was interesting). I whole-heartedly agree with sociopath.
The political situation here is problematic but it is one that should be resolved by Cambodians. Whether they acquiesce to the one-party state, or take to the streets, frankly, I really don't care as long as we are allowed to stay here in the country and carry on with our lives and jobs.

That’s a pretty ignorant and small minded view.sociopath wrote:my only thought would be keep your nose out of it

Every country has NGOs. they mostly serve a great purpose. Food banks, hospice care, cancer research, NSPCC to name only a few.
Why should Cambodia be different?
Cambodia would be even more on its arse if it wasn’t for the investment by many worthy NGOs over the years.
all i can see is that these meddling NGOs have killed more Cambdians than AIDS.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:That’s a pretty ignorant and small minded view.sociopath wrote:my only thought would be keep your nose out of it

As for lifting Cambodia the NGOs are more of an impediment than a help, thing that has lifted this country is Chinese investment money

I think you are incredibly wrong. Cambodia would be able to stand on its own two feet if it wasn't for 25 years of endless donations that have resulted in a hugely retarded 'development'. Theorists used to refer to an economic 'dependency theory' in relation to Latin America in the 70's and 80's - here we have a donor dependency. 'They (NGOs) mostly serve a great purpose' - in their initial time perhaps. But invariably they forget to close shop once that time is up, to go home and let the country develop by itself.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:That’s a pretty ignorant and small minded view.sociopath wrote:my only thought would be keep your nose out of it

I did start to warn you all six months ago.
NGO's have been recognised for what they are. Cambodia is China's biggest ally in Asean.
China now makes NGO's register with the Central Government and make their case for what they want to achieve and how they fund it. Cambodia is following that model.
Getting a visa will become more difficult too. I also warned you about that.
Get married, get an accredited job, or get out. It's that simple.

Don’t get me wrong. This is absolutely the right way to go. NGOs have had it too easy for too long.Pu Li wrote:

But it isn’t just China - most developed countries requires charitable organisations (NGOs) to apply to status. & there isn’t a foregone conclusion that they will be accepted.
I find it so strange that NGOs exist in pretty much every country in the world - and punters on here are insisting that NGOs must leave Cambodia. Should they leave every country?

I don’t know where you are from but I listed a number of NGOs working in the U.K. U.K. is developed but still requires their input and assistance.RBD wrote:I think you are incredibly wrong. There is some truth to what you say - but I feel it is far too simplistic.
You say ‘let the country develop by itself’ would that include the use of local NGOs?
