That toxic "hold the relationship hostage if you don't get what you want" tactic then.
I'm of course no diplomat, so I say the US should see the relationship for what it is and just do as the big man says. Focus on those next door, and wait for a change of guard.
It should be noted that Chinese money is almost always in the form of loans, whereas a lot of western cash is for free. Well, for free, on condition that some empty political promises are made.yahoo news wrote:China vastly outspends the United States ... and its money goes on highly visible infrastructure projects and with no demands for political reform.

Why can't Americans do what others do? Amongst others, the Japanese and Germans operate NGOs here and none of them have problems. That's because they do not stick their noses in domestic matters that do not concern them. Unlike Americans who always have this unnatural predisposition to nosiness. A habit of treating other jurisdictions on this planet as their 51st state or a territorial extension of their country!
Meddling in the affairs of others is just plain wrong. It's not how guests are expected to behave towards their host. I'm not entirely sure if this pernicious habit is a genetic thing or an uncontrollable urge to police this planet.
Visas should be made harder to get. I agree with this government's immigration roadmap.

Re that Bangkok Post article:
It's very hard to see how Cambodia would make up for the substantial loss to the exports markets the EU and US provide. It's top export product is clothing. Other exports are Timber, Rubber, Rice, Fish, Tobacco and Footwear, in pretty much that order. China doesn't want clothes or shoes, nor does Russia, although it is increasing its rubber imports, but in no stretch of the imagination could it ever make up for the billions lost if the EU and US were to pull out of Cambodian markets. The economy would take a direct hit and I can't see China supplying an endless amount of money to make up for it over a prolonged period.
Especially seeing as the Philippines etc are moving closer to China. ( see Strangio - https://asia.nikkei.com/Viewpoints/Seba ... age?page=1) After all, what really has a tiny country of 16 million got to offer a giant like China apart from its ASEAN vetoing power?
Troubling times ahead I think, but only if both the EU and US put their money where their mouth is.
