2017/18 Ashes
This great series will be shortly upon us. An enormous pity that the best all-rounder in the world won't be there (yes, I know he is officially ranked only as #4). England's main problems are at #3 at the moment, with Vince looking unconvincing so far. Their tour build up wasn't going too badly until a chastening final day against a practice CAXI on a slow pitch. The Aussies' selections have also come in for criticism though with eyebrows raised at some of those decisions. Shane Warne reckoned they looked 'confused.'
I'm damn sure it won't be 5-0 this time, though. It's about time Jimmy Anderson had a good overseas tour and this could be it - he did bowl beautifully in India last year, it has to be said. I'm a Notts fan, so have kept an eye on Jake Ball's progress; he definitely isn't a ODI bowler, but could step up well on Australian pitches, as should Woakes, in the tests. Good to see Stoneman and Malan in the runs from an England perspective.
But can Australia keep their wonderful fast bowlers fully fit? Once again, an intriguing series awaits. Can't wait!

This Gabba pitch doesn't seem to have that much pace in it. There's some early turn for Lyon as well. Good fifty for Vince!

All set up for a tight series. Jimmy has trapped Hanscomb as I write. Australia in trouble at 76-4.

Until January 8th.
Looks as if England have shagged up the fist test anyway. Punchy punchy Stokes and Hales are sorely missed.

And as if England's start to the tour isn't bad enough, this news is out:

No surprise England lost at the Gabba, they've only won there twice in 70 years. The Gabba is a mean pitch and Australia always hold the first test there. Apart from that though, is Aust's. pace attack; really fast, and had the wicket not been so slow in the opening days, Eng. may have been gone by drinks on the third day.
Good news is that Stokes has been released to play for Canterbury on Sunday, and possibly available to play in the 3rd Ashes test. Hard pressed to see Stokes being a panacea for the team, but he is a class act to watch.

Kinard, mate, I seriously doubt whether Stokesy, fantastic player that he is, will be available to England throughout any part of this tour. The pressing of charges itself will likely take up to three months or so.
I, as an England fan, take some comfort from the fact that England competed for several sessions at the 'Gabbatoir' with Jimmy & Broady looking very good, but Woakes and Jake Ball looking very ordinary.
Anyway, as ever, a fascinating series between these sides; England should feel more 'at home' in Adelaide Pink Ball conditions, but there is always the 'unknown Ashes Factor' to contend with.
How I love this series...
