That’s an interesting article. Of course it only flaunts the closure of the magazine as an attack on free press, and just barely mentions the tax issue towards the end. The author should have devoted at least one paragraph to the fact that taxes weren’t paid, and their arguments throughout the month of August on why they shouldn’t have to.
It certainly paints him as an asshole. Not helping his reporter who got cancer; not defending a Cambodian journalist sued for defamation, and then suggesting he go to jail for a few days; and countless other examples.
It also paints him as going a little senile. It mentions his wife has dimentia, that he didn’t remember the journalist interviewing him, and that when asked how the paper had a lasting effect on Cambodia he stated “It’s now a democracy.”
I’ve also flown into the country at least ten times since the paper closed, and always peer into the immigration booth. I have never seen his name there, and how could the author know it was posted in every immigration booth?

That is a really good, relatively tactfully written article.
I often heard former foreign employees complaining about Bernie's style, antics and moodswings. But I rather feel pity for him now. He's been outlived by his achievements and it's sad and pitiful how he clings onto those near the end of his life.
While The Daily's management was ruthless and ludicrous at times (anybody remembering the plug about Himawari having the best river view.... was it in Cambodia or the world??), the paper did train a host of Cambodian journalists who went on to report for other papers, radio and TV stations, and some of the foreign journalists did amazing reporting.

Like the HST "Rum Diaries" but with Uncle Sam sponsor rather than real estate scammers.
The fact that it operated as an NGO is ridiculously disingenuous.
As to the journalists trained by the CD- where are they now?
Under close surveillance I would think.
Maybe VOA candidates.

But an “NGO” because it trained journalists? How is that different than the fully tax compliant Phnom Penh Post?Taa Moan wrote:Like the HST "Rum Diaries" but with Uncle Sam sponsor rather than real estate scammers.

Wait, can my factory be an NGO because it trains future managers and low skilled laborers their job too?
I feel sorry for the unskilled workers who lost their jobs.
So often expats stir, and Khmers face the music.

Great article on an amazing, if flawed, character. I still believe that the Cambodia Daily's downfall came about because of their totally un-moderated Facebook page. Nobody who mattered cared about them while they were selling 5000 copies a day around the capital and a few provincial centers. Their website had a paywall that stopped most easy access. For years they had a couple of pages summarizing the main articles in Khmer script in the middle, and eventually did have a full-Khmer edition too, but with very low circulation.
So some genius in the Daily decided to set up a Facebook page. It rapidly became a clusterfuck of epic proportions. A typical exchange could start anywhere, "New Factory Opens", "Dolphin found drowned", "Local woman wins Karaoke contest before being hacked to death by jealous suitor", but would inevitably end up with comments such as "The Boss is a Vietnamese running dog bastard", "Puppet of the Yuon Dog" or "We will kill all of you and your family". The last was surprisingly common. Most of the comments were from the usual Long Beach, Lowell etc diaspora. The same people who used to comment on KI-Media. If you allow your name to be associated with garbage like that, don't be too surprised when you get a reaction. And shame on the asshole foreigners who regularly chimed in on their Facebook page to encourage the malignant idiocy.

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

I always thought it funny that they regularly accused the government of corruption but tried to weasel out of taxes via some claim based on hope or BS rather than any resemblance to truth.
Even then the government gave them a chance, they requested their books within a month but were ignored...if they had offered some kind of conciliatory stance at that stage, they may have survived, but no, ignore, and then go on the offensive

Right? If they had any ground to stand on they could have even said “here is our PWC (or any legit firm) audit”.maven wrote:I always thought it funny that they regularly accused the government of corruption but tried to weasel out of taxes via some claim based on hope or BS rather than any resemblance to truth.

The whole tax thing is pretty irrelevant. I know that many foreigners running hotels who paid no tax and even pocketed the VAT. Some huge amounts of money are being repaid by restaurants and hotels, in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
LL has got it right as usual with the facebook page. I cringed as I read those comments made by the KI media Long Beach type Khmers. Their lack of political nous and lack of sophistication sums up many Khmer in the US who are ill educated morons who have barely set foot in Cambodia.
Is KI Media still going, I hope not.
