String around the waist
String around the waist
Many Khmer - both male and female - wear a string around their waists. Sometimes several and sometimes with long narrow beads on them. I thing they start this at or shortly before puberty.
I thought this was some kind of rite of passage or chastity thing but a chick recently told me it is - you guessed it - to ward off ghosts.
Info?

They are not just for teens. Any parent can get one for their child at any age.
It's made by the head monks of the local Sangkat and he makes it and blesses it then it's offered to the child/adult during a short blessing.
They are made from plastic beads, string and lead.
It is to protect the wearer against shaman or witch doctor who would otherwise want to do harm.

Is "mae tmook" the Khmer word for shaman or witch doctor? Can you elaborate?
I think it's the same lucky string that the wife tied on my moto years ago.
I'm still married. Do I get a refund?

There are two 2 stories to this.
Some believe it helps to fend off evil forces or offer protection. Others believe it brings good luck.
White thick string is what people normally wear. However for those who are wealthier they wear gold. They are also convenient to strap your wallet during the pre KR era.

The Thais have similar tradition too. I was this in Chonburri where the sellers wear a thick string tied with big wooden cock in front of their belly, when they arent many buyers at their stores they give the wooden cock a wank as it is believed to bring buyers/people to their store on whatever they are selling.

Wearing a curled-up piece of toxic metal next to your skin seems like a great idea.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
You can learn all about it from this culturally aware Peace Corp lady, who seems quite certain that Khmer monks are reciting prayers in "fluid Balinese" and etching "ancient Balinese prayers" onto silver paper to imbue luck into her waist jewellery: https://travelnoire.com/shine-search-ca ... ist-beads/
