Oh, I thought you did, because you started this thread to publicly complain that the manager disapproved of an employee giving you special treatment.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: I didn’t/don’t expect special treatment.

I generally find the Khmer to be solicitous, cooperative and sopheap - if a bit spacey.

You should of follow gavinmac impeccable logic. When at the check out politely ask the cashier, "excuse me mam, can I please go to get my purse at the check in to pay for my items."
Next you will find it perfectly acceptable getting your local friends some coffins as a present when visiting them.

In VN you just say "laptop" and you can take your bag in.
The reasoning is, of course, that the staff will steal your laptop: rather than protect it and stop you stealing. Lovely people Asians.

Lucky Mall Siem Reap asked for bags to be checked when they first opened. I have no problem with that but the counter was always unstaffed. They eventually gave up last year and now you can take any bag in.

There are many other shops and supermarkets where you do not have to check your bag. It's not like these places don't already have like 15 staff standing around playing on their phones already. As a personal anecdote the only time I've ever been asked to check my backpack was bayon which only has like 2 staff at any given time anyways, and to be fair that day had been a rough one for me in the kow. I probably looked grubby as shit.gavinmac wrote:You're only a nuisance if you expect special treatment and refuse to check your bag like everyone else.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: The ‘customer is king’ maxim certainly doesn’t apply in many places here.
Even regular customers are seen as somewhat of a nuisance and is not an issue if they leave to shop elsewhere.
i always look grubby as shit. they havent asked me to check my bag on the few times i have been there. but they did have substantially more than 2 staff on board each time.Gardiguy wrote:There are many other shops and supermarkets where you do not have to check your bag. I’d happily let someone search my bag on entry and exit (my experience of Thai malls is having to get search on the way in). I would be leaving my bag with the staff though, not worth the risk.
Is this a recent thing? I often go into Thai huot, lucky & super duper with my backpack and have never been asked.

It was in Bayon. They aren’t consistent - sometimes they ask, sometimes they don’t.
If it’s my sweaty gym gear I’m happy to give it to them. If I have my iPad or cash in the bag then I am less keen.

Teflers never have this problem. They simply don't have more than $10 on them at any given time.
