I was talking to someone who lived there when it opened. Back then he said the location was fine, as there was no traffic; now, on the other hands, it's of course a shit location. Apparently at the time they considered opening it next to the Cambodiana, where he owned land, but instead chose this location. What a lack of foresight
Back then there was still the possibility that the authorities would do the obvious and create the CBD in the west of the city, somewhere around Olympic or a bit further towards the airport, conserving the historic part of the city, as has been done in many cities around the world - Bangkok, for example. Needless to say it didn't happen.Miguelito wrote:I was talking to someone who lived there when it opened. just a note here that no terrorist attack has ever targeted the streets and gutters that admin has censored me from while attacks on this class of establishment are frequent around the world and have been for a long time nowKABUL, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- At least 18 people have been killed, including 14 foreign nationals, in a deadly attack on the Intercontinental hotel in Afghanistan's capital Kabul, a spokesman of the Afghan Interior Ministry said on Sunday.
All five attackers were also killed during the gunfight with Afghan security forces.
A 12-hour siege following Saturday night's attack ended on Sunday.
Spokesman Najib Danish told local Tolo News TV that those among the killed were four Afghans and 14 foreign nationals.
Kam Air, a local airline, said earlier that 11 of its foreign staff were killed in the hotel attack claimed by Taliban, adding that several local staff of the company were among the casualties.
The siege started Saturday night after five Taliban suicide bombers stormed the six-storey luxury hotel overlooking the city.
A total of 12 people were also injured in the attack.
The Taliban militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
in the process of fucking off to the land of honey and free beer
I bet a few bad Tripadvisor reviews came after this attack. "The room was fine but the terror attack was totally unacceptable. I did not anticipate this in Kabul after 16 years of war".
Translation, anyone?Youn Hoo Fatt wrote:just a note here that no terrorist attack has ever targeted the streets and gutters that admin has censored me from while attacks on this class of establishment are frequent around the world and have been for a long time now

Hmmm. The An faction of the Five Families appointed as liquidators ???
Anyway, damn shame - many a great Grand Final party run by those rascally NGO racketeers and affordable, monthly, wine and cheese nights.
I’ll never forget the erstwhile tobacco descriminatrix who became an Interconn barfly and chain-smoker after Yellow Fever fairly and squarely kicked the home front in the balls.
Ah, to be a Dutchwoman in the Asian third world. Best dim sum in town for a while there, too.
RIP Interconn - hope photos of the good times have been stored on a hard drive somewhere.

^Yeah it was pretty cool in its day and certainly had its moments.
My personal highlight was the first Octobfest in 2001. A major major piss up, which ended with a respected European Ambassador face down catching a few zzz’s in his goulash.
