The InterContinental - An end to an era?
The InterContinental here in Phnom Penh has been in operation for two decades, and has certainly had a large presence in that time. However, have the quality standards gone down, or are they simply going in another direction?
If driving past you will see a new sign, The Great Duke, in place. I have been told that they are ceasing their relationship with the InterCon, to be fully effective by the end of February/early March. It is unclear to me if the InterCon brand is axing the franchise based on poor quality standards that do not fit its brand, or if the owner has decided that he would be better off on his own. Either way, I can already predict that their focus is shifting from Western business travelers to Chinese. I was also told that they are yet another company that have made all of their Western staff redundant.
Anyone else know anything about this big change?

Did IHG not own the hotel then? Just the branding?
Or is the Great Duke name also an IHG brand name?

Very few, if any, of the large brand hotels are owned by the brands. These are usually just management/franchise contracts with one partner coughing up the building and the other the expertise and sales/HR/administrative infrastructure.ReasonstobefearfulP3 wrote:Did IHG not own the hotel then? I believe the owner of the building is the Okhna whose mansion is directly behind it. Great Duke is certainly not an IHG brand name.ReasonstobefearfulP3 wrote:Did IHG not own the hotel then? Just the branding?

I don't think it will "affect" too many people here, one way or another, but I think it is an interesting enough development.Youn Hoo Fatt wrote:doesnt affect me at all, except when i need to know to keep weeelll away
Why do you persist with cluttering up threads with these pointless, meaningless comments? You do realise that If you don't have anything worth contributing, you can just not post on a thread?Youn Hoo Fatt wrote:Anyone else know anything about this big change?

Who is that? Hun To (nephew of HE) with his peacocks? He has the big house behind the Intercon (but that wasn't listed as an asset of his in the transparency international report)

As a follow up, I have now heard that the IHG contract (a management agreement, which as Hanno stated, is very common), was up at the beginning of the year, and the owner decided not to renew it.
Apparently the heads of the departments were supplied by IHG and mostly came from other IHG properties in other countries, and a few are being reassigned to other IHG properties elsewhere (and fwiw they were mostly Filipinos, not westerners, my bad).
