Are you seriously sad? The place looks horrible. I knew a westerner you worked there and was informed almost two years ago that the shift was on Chinese. He stopped working there well over a year ago and moved to Vietnam.
I've never been in the rooms, but I always found the conference halls so-so and the building screams of 1992 from the outside. Peeling paint, weird design etc. Doesn't evoke luxury at all. Location is also horrible for both casual tourists and those here for business. It was always out of the way, but with traffic it's even worse. So many better options now, including a Mariott and a Hyatt if you want big names. Then there's always Sofitel and Raffles. You're years late to the news Miguelito.
[EDIT] Oh, and since their price hikes and Khema started their wine and cheese nights, I don't think anyone goes there for food anymore. There's champagne available at so many places now, in nicer settings. How many people go to their Christmas dinners now? Kind of curious.

Is the Marriott open now? Is this the one on the corner of st63 and st214?LexusSchmexus wrote:Are you seriously sad? The place looks horrible. I haven’t been in the area for a while but last time I was it looked nowhere near completion.

Neither the Hyatt or Marriott are finished. Courtyard Marriott has all the glass panels on and finishing inside going on as we speak. It'll be finished first. Hyatt is far away from completion, but will probably be open in late 2018 or 2019. The point stands though: with big players (and independent ones) now in town that have brand new buildings in central locations, who the hell would want to pay top $$ to stay at the Inter-Con?kiwiincambodia wrote:Is the Marriott open now? The Rosewood is also shaping up to be pretty good, their rooms will also have great views and I'm sure their bar on the ledge of the Vattanac tower is going to be a crowd pleaser. It should be open by April apparently.

November 2013:
January 2017:
Luxury hotel brand Rosewood is coming to Phnom Penh, seeking to occupy the top 14 floors of the Vattanac Capital Tower by 2015, the company said in a statement yesterday.
January 2017:
January 2018:Initially slated to be operational in 2015, and subsequently delayed to the last quarter of 2016, 5-star hotel Rosewood Phnom Penh has recently authenticated its definite commencement for the second half of 2017.

I thought rosewood had opened already.
I know a few people who told me that they work there. That was about 4 months!
What the hell could they be doing if the hotel hasn’t opened yet?
They can’t be training staff if the opening isn’t at least imminent.
Is there even a restaurant open?

But I do think it's actually coming close to completion now. I saw pics on my FB feed of a friend that was having drinks there, so it must have been a private soft launching or something.

Par for the course. I first came to SE Asia to open a hotel. I left after two years with the hotel still not open; it finally took them 4 years....ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:I thought rosewood had opened already.

Percentage growth in barang tourist numbers will surely be on the decline over the next few years in the KOW, so be interesting how much these places get filled given the explosion of building.

That’s growth. Which still means more and more people are coming each year....spitthedog wrote:Percentage growth in barang tourist numbers will surely be on the decline over the next few years in the KOW, so be interesting how much these places get filled given the explosion of building.

The 2012/2013 figures surely were unsustainable. I’d have thought that 5% growth is still pretty healthy.
The explosion of building is largely Boreys and apartments - tourists aren’t staying in those.

Tell that to all the hotel owners in Siem Reap that have half empty hotels to contend with.

I don’t know much about SR hotel trade, but wouldn’t be surprised if there are more tourists spending time in PP & SHV than there previously was & therefore stealing some tourists from SR.
But surely it’s just the Khmer way - they see an opportunity to make money and everyone jumps on and tries to ride the gravy train. Then only the strongest/smartest/deepest pockets survive.
Cashews/rubber/mango/hotels/condos at one stage each were seen the path to quick riches. Until everyone tried to get in on it and oversupplied.

It is more a question of oversupply. Most tourists that do come to Temple Town do not go anywhere else, but the number of hotel rooms has risen considerably faster than the increase in arrivals.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:Directed at me?Hanno wrote:Tell that to all the hotel owners in Siem Reap that have half empty hotels to contend with.
