Couldn't the new owner do that without accusing anyone of stealing? "I'm the new owner. Nice to meet you. Get out."Dontbesilly wrote:new owner wanted to hire friends

How much did it sell for? Usually you are taking on a lease and buying the fixtures and fittings but considering it resembled what people had found in a skip emptied into a vandalised house I'm guessing 2 cases of Mekong Whisky and a pack of Fine cigarettes?

Here are the facts as I understand them:
The old owner Carla, sold showbox to the new owner Richard, without giving a heads up to any of her staff, who had loyally been working for her for over five years. On the very night she was leaving, she emptied all the tills and left a series of debts with beer companies. Upon finding this out, a couple of days later, the new owner was livid, and shouted at all the betrayed staff, calling them among other things a "thieving bunch of cunts". The staff, who were already down in the dumps because the person that they had trusted for a long time had just buggered off without any warning, decided they had had enough and quit, forsaking any final salaries. The new owner then took to the Show Box facebook page where he accused them of stealing all the money from the till and leaving him in debt with the beer company. About 5 hours later, he decided to take down the post, realising no doubt that he could actually be taken to court over a false allegation like that.
So it is clear that all this has arisen from a dispute between the old owner and the new, but as always, the main victims are the Khmer staff. The old owner, Carla, still owns a % of Show Box, which is why she has been letting out her inner pikey at the bad reviews on Facebook. I was one of the people who wrote a bad review, and she sent me a message saying that Richard, the new owner, is also accusing her of theft (not publicly though), and that her and her old staff are all on the same boat, which they are obviously not on though, as she was the one who actually took the money and left the debt, and she is laughing all the way to the bank.
From personal experience, she was an awful employer who exploited and did not appreciate her staff, who never paid sick leave, seldom allowed them to go on holiday, and had a lot of them working 13 hour days, 6 day weeks, for which she paid 200 usd a month.
The sad thing is that my description is probably not raising many eyebrows, as western bar owners who run their establishments like a farm is tragic but standard. We, as potential clientele though, do have the power to attempt to set a standard. To try to move away from this colonialist attitude that it is acceptable to treat Khmers a way that no white person would expect to be treated, just because Khmers could have it way, way worse. I call for a boycott of businesses that are known to not afford their staff some basic human decency, until they publicly acknowledge their actions and apologise for them, correcting their ways.

She didn't own showbox five years ago.
$200 per month is a generous bar salary. In fact, across many trades in Cambodia, it would be a decent wage.
Cambodian staff are not the kind who "loyally give five years service" if being malteated.

I've met Carla but I don't remotely know her, so my comments are purely in response to the above quoted post...
It is bizarre that she sold it without telling anyone. Perhaps that speaks to her fake relationship with the staff or perhaps it speaks to an owner that is having some issues of some description. shrug. who knows?
I saw at least one post on the Showbox FB page that stated it was Carla posting under the Showbox user name. Was she sharing the admin rights with the new owner, or was she writing all the comments related to this?
As for who 'stole' money ... outsiders are not likely to know. Staff and previous owner know.
the first two underlined pieces don't correlate with the third. The notion they were exploited is ridiculous.Jackal wrote:Bollox.HarryKetley wrote:Here are the facts as I understand them:

If the seller is taking the cash on the day of the sale (not uncommon) the seller generally pays off the outstanding bills.

but we don't know for sure that the seller took the cash, as we weren't there to see that. It is just one person's version. Unless the owner has said she took the cash. Did she say that? (not saying the family did either. Just saying we don't know)

my understanding (which may be wrong) is that one of the family essentially managed the place. they were happy there. they loved showbox. I know one member of the family worked at showbox and at other bars around town. she always returned to showbox because she liked working there. this does not stand up against posts that now say they were made to work 13 hours a day, and these emotive posts about ' íf they EVER try to quit they are threatened and publicly accused of theft.' talk about a twisting of timeline events.
Edited as unsubstantiated feelings don’t help, but there is always room for speculation ... if the decision to sell was made without talking to the family, perhaps facts about the arrangement between Carla and the family were withheld from the buyer.

Yeah I don’t think the staff were unhappy and exploited.
I have been there within the past few months and chatted with the staff in Khmer and I didn’t get the normal ‘my salary so small’ or ‘I work so tired’ complaints.
What many foreigners don’t seem to get is that a 13 hour shift doesn’t mean that someone is working for 13 hours. Maybe back home people are expected to work for a full shift, but here sitting doing nothing for 25% of your shift is not uncommon - and kinda appreciated by the worker.
Need to understand the western vs eastern concept of time.
And TBH - looking at showbox, the staff certainly weren’t spending their quiet periods cleaning the place.

It's Showbox. The place isn't supposed to be cleaned.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:Yeah I don’t think the staff were unhappy and exploited.
