I haven't been to Pontoon since it was an actual pontoon floating in the Tonle Sap. It was a nice pontoon with a central bar and a giant boat docked alongside where the place was run from. You had to walk through a decrepit part of the quays (part of them were collapsed at the time) and across a few planks. It was a nice setting but the bar staff were absent or busy most of the time so you could easily die of fucking thirst even when the place was far from busy. Whatever.
Heart of Darkness was great when I first went there as a tourist almost 20 years ago. It was a small (2 units wide at the time) and intimate place where you could easily meet some interesting characters. I was at FCC one evening and my mate got freaked out because Matt Dillon and his large contingent of women turned up. So we fucked off to Heart. Dillon turned up 5 minutes later, we joked that he was following us! He was cool anyway, he said he'd been visiting the country since 1993 and had a big thing for it. The point being that there were only a few places to hang out at the time, so it was a lot easier to meet the very small expat community at the time. Sharky Bar and Martini's were sleazy but Heart wasn't so much. I wasn't here for a few years and during that time the Heart became popular with rich locals. Somehow it got sketchy. I wasn't sure when I came back whether I would go there or not. Funnily enough, the same day I moved here to live someone got executed with a bullet to the back of the head on the dance-floor. It was closed down but then demolished and completely rebuilt into the shape it is now. I went there a good few times after it re-opened, but the music was always cheesy as fuck and there were some nasty vibes. They flooded the whole place for KNY in 2006, that was a blast. I don't know when it turned totally gay, the owner was always obviously gay but the crowd wasn't anything in particular.
Both have been redundant for a long time now, it's not like when there are only a handful of choices.

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

Yeah, the floating Pontoon was way cool. I was disappointed when that closed down - it had some character that can't be replicated.
Heart is a gay club these days as you say. We used to go there as the Mrs liked not having all the tarts competing for attention, however, the last few times we went she got a bit sick of the antics of the boys in there. Watching boys kissing isn't high on my list of things to see in nightclubs either!
We also used to go to Nova a bit, but got a bit sick of the staff in there bulldozing through on the dance floor. Sometimes they physically push you out of their way when walking through with food or drink orders - fuckers.

Pontoon is great, great, great... almost french kissed a ladyboy. Swear to God, to this day, cannot comprehend if it was the 3 bottles of wine after 5 shots of tequila mixed in a pint of beer or the stroboscopic lights who dazzled me. Or maybe she was beautiful

Closed down? It bloody sunk! I was on it that night, managed to get off in time before the speakers and sound equipment went down with some of the more inebriated patrons.
Heart seems to be having a bit of a resurgence as an 'underground'venue, with Leeroy from The Prodigy and Stanton Warriors playing in recent weeks. Club Love has gone full commercial cheese (hardly surprising given its demographic) while only the Pulse part of Pontoon plays anything decent. Eddie Newman seems to have big plans this year - the 2 gigs at Heart already mentioned and he has The Pharcyde coming in March. (unsure of venue for this one)Lucky Lucan wrote:I haven't been to Pontoon since it was an actual pontoon floating in the Tonle Sap. It's always good to keep an eye on what Eddie's up to - that'll be the more interesting stuff going on.
The (2nd) sinking of Pontoon wasn't the end of it - it was the launch night of Eddie taking it over it. That was the Pontoon's hay day, then it moved down to Diamond Island. It was after they got screwed over there that it moved to dry land.
I thought Nova was closed to be renovated by the guy who stole $2 million off some Cambodians and then has been stood half-finished since he got locked up?

Not been to Nova for a year or more, didn't know it was done and dusted.1984 wrote:It's always good to keep an eye on what Eddie's up to - that'll be the more interesting stuff going on.

Here's the thread, although someone says Raqia is on 172 but it's not, it's the old Nova location on Street 214. http://www.khmer440.com/chat_forum/view ... 14&t=60561
Edit: On closer inspection he opened Raqia on 172 then took over Nove on 214 to open second Raqia.

He actually moved it from 172 to the old Valhalla site on 102 then as the cash was flowing in from the Khmer woman he set about building a second more nightclub version on 214 by Pencil and work stopped the day he was arrested.1984 wrote:Here's the thread, although someone says Raqia is on 172 but it's not, it's the old Nova location on Street 214. http://www.khmer440.com/chat_forum/view ... 14&t=60561
