I got into a debate on social media, which I detest, regarding mob justice.
- I honestly think, we should let the Khmers be themselves. Some people think mobs happen because others like to cause pain and destruction, others think that it's because local people know the authorities won't enforce the law.
I also saw a few trolling comments regarding traffic laws and tuk tuks near independence monument. I really wanted to lay into GavinMac, but I detest social media debates.
- If the passapps don't know how to get around, it's because the newer drivers only follow google maps. They're not all seasoned tuk tuk drivers. So, don't be a dick, tell them where you want them to go.

I don't think we have any choice about whether we should let Khmers be themselves or not, there are a lot more of them than us here for starters. Plus they have their own way of doing things, and are proudly obstinate.0zirC wrote:I got into a debate on social media, which I detest, regarding mob justice.

However I don't encourage mob-violence. It's all too easy for mistakes to be made. That professor getting battered yesterday was really excessive. I can understand wanting to batter someone for hurting someone you care about, but this was a totally disproportionate response. And I bet many of the by-standers just joined in knowing nothing of the circumstances. Mobs here don't just beat relatively wealthy reckless drivers, they kill kids for stealing a $2 bucket and "sorcerors" for making their aunt sick. Obviously there's not much that can be done about it but it's a very scary phenomena and shouldn't be in any way encouraged.

Shortly after arriving here in 2008 I joined a crowd gathered around an alleyway near the riverside where a thief was getting his face smashed in. There were over 100 people there and 0 police (a motorbike eventually shot out of the alleyway with the perp on the back). 10 years later police actually turn up when a mob beats someone up. Then they let the suspect immediately leave the country.
If the only oppourtunity to seek justice is in the heat of the moment then you can't really criticise people for failing to be proportionate.

This incident predates that of the recent mob attack. In this instance, the drunk-driver ran over a street vendor and tried to escape, other motorists followed him until police eventually stopped him. No mob attack happened here.
There was an expat defending the SUV driver regarding his victims(re: the most recent incident), as he didn't believe the witnesses that were in pursuit of the University Professor.

Mob justice is - by definition - crude and arbitrary but
how often does it go wrong?

Shortly after moving here in 2005 I was on 271 and saw a near-lynching. There was a crowd of about 50-100, and this guy in the middle dressed in black with his arms tied tightly behind his back with a thick hemp rope. He was bleeding badly from the top of his head and people were throwing smacks and digs at the guy. It looked terrible, but a couple of cops waded in with AKs held up and saved him. I didn't join in, just slowed down and looked over a bit. The old guy I was with just explained it with one word "stealers". It's a good idea not to hang around when incidents like that are going down. I've seen some other weird shit since but I don't think I ever saw another mob beating.ali baba wrote:Shortly after arriving here in 2008 I joined a crowd gathered around an alleyway near the riverside where a thief was getting his face smashed in. I can understand people's frustrations when cars just smack into them and drive off, or even after being reported don't get prosecuted. I think the incident OzircC posted was well handled, of course in other cases the car driver might not always be so compliant. I'm not with you on this vigilante thing, because of the reasons I already pointed out.
