Kak Channthy from Cambodian Space Project Killed in Traffic Accident
Might at least highlight the lunatic driving here. The driver is apparently a young guy in a Camry who is now being held for 'murder' (????). If it was the drunken young "I can do what I what" Madam in her white SUV (see other thread about her falling asleep while driving), she would of course get off with a verbal warning.
Where did you here it was a young guy driving a Camry like a lunatic. I heard it was a young woman driving a Lexus with the green light and the tuk tuk ran the red.RBD wrote:Might at least highlight the lunatic driving here. https://www.phnompenhpost.com/national/ ... k-channthyhe 21-year-old driver of a car that collided with a tuk-tuk in a crash that killed Cambodian Space Project lead singer Kak Channthy has been charged with negligent driving and sent to prison.
Nguon Sreynich was taken into detention last week where she will await trial.
Phnom Penh Municipal Court spokesman Ly Sophana on Monday said Sreynich had been charged with negligent driving causing unintentional injury and death.
Sreynich’s Toyota Prius allegedly collided with a tuk-tuk near the intersection of Mao Tse Toung Boulevard and Street 163 in the early hours of Tuesday last week.
The driver of the tuk-tuk reportedly received a minor head injury, and a man travelling with Channthy was also injured and taken to hospital for treatment. It is believed Channthy was knocked from the tuk-tuk on impact and struck her head on the ground.
According to an interview Sreynich gave to TVFB shortly after the accident, which occurred about 1:30am, a camera in her car captured the fatal incident and would provide evidence that she was not at fault.
“I came straight at a green light. And then he came through a red light, violating the law. The priority was mine,” she said.
She said her car and the tuk-tuk were travelling at about the same speed, while the tuk-tuk driver, also interviewed by TVFB at the scene, said he did not remember the collision clearly, but claimed the car was speeding.
If found guilty, Sreynich, identified as the daughter of vendors, faces up to three years in prison and a fine of up to 15 million riel ($3,900), unless there are other circumstances that would raise the penalty.
A funeral for Channthy was held late last week in her home province of Prey Veng, while family, friends and fans also gathered at a fundraiser on Saturday night to raise money to help pay for the education of her 13-year-old son Makara.
Bringing the news. You stay classy, nas, Cambodia.

Having been involved in a couple of car accidents and several bike prangs over the years it looks to me like this was not a high speed crash. The damage to the tuk tuk seems fairly minimal. It is also concentrated on one side which indicates the tuk tuk pulled out.
Very sad and tragic but don't think the car driver is the speeding drink some have tried to make her out as.
Condolences to partner, friends and family.

Nah, she was driving a Toyota Prius. They are one of the cheaper cars on the roads here.Jamie_Lambo wrote:correctGardiguy wrote:Where did you here it was a young guy driving a Camry like a lunatic. I just watched that video from the first post for the first time, it was heartbreaking,
especially seeing her kid so upset.

Yeah, fair enough. There's often this assumption that any car driver here is some stinking rich maniac. It turns out this was just the daughter of some market vendors though. And now she's in jail.

So it's been a week now since the accident. The Story goes that she handed in the video from the car or it was acquired by the cops not long after the accident. She is still in jail yet seems sure the video shows the tuktuk blowing a red light and in the wrong. So does that mean the video showed that she was actually in the wrong or is the guy who's supposed to be looking at the video busy sitting in a hammock somewhere. Or maybe it was inconclusive? I guess they wouldn't be awaiting trial if it was clear.
But then, this IS Cambodia.

For the police it’s wealth and/or connections first – innocence or guilt are secondary at best.
I’ve always wondered about those Indian tuk tuks, their relative safety vs. the regular ones. They look awfully small & light. Vulnerable.

Correct - initial stories were rubbish. Surprise, surprise.Gardiguy wrote:Where did you here it was a young guy driving a Camry like a lunatic. Seems the young lady might spend some time in prison for this, despite the fact that the TT ran a red light (if the current story is to be believed). Unlike the other young lady who, drunk out her mind, mowed down that Irish guy a few years back and then tried to make a getaway. Surprise, surprise (again). Cambodia justice.
