Celebrating Vietnamese Friendship
This morning there appeared to be a military ceremony of sorts at the Cambodia-Vietnamese memorial. Nothing too crazy, but red carpets and a military band, and some brass around. I asked someone nearby what it was for, and his response surprised me. He told me that it was for the Vietnamese, who were "very good people". He said, "you know, there was the Khmer Rouge, and then the Vietnamese came. Very good people, the Vietnamese. Good friends."
He then said the Japanese and Chinese were also good, but not as good as the Vietnamese.
With all of the political rhetoric, it always surprises how many Cambodians I meet that say nice things of the Vietnamese, or who speak some as they have so many Vietnamese friends, etc. Maybe the CNRP chose the wrong scapegoat all these years.

Are you saying that maybe they have a new scapegoat? And that maybe there is some growing sentiment that...on reflection, maybe the Viet influence in the KOW wasn't as bad after all?Miguelito wrote: He then said the Japanese and Chinese were also good, but not as good as the Vietnamese.

I thought that it was an interesting observation, and although I live here and work and talk with Cambodians every day, some other posters would certainly have more insight into this than me, and I would be interested to here their opinions.spitthedog wrote:Are you saying that maybe they have a new scapegoat? Certainly the current government has a reason to remind the people that, as you say, maybe the Viet influence in the KOW wasn't as bad after all. Our new holiday in May will help serve that purpose, after all.
I come across a fair few, especially in the military, who have either been sent to VN for training or trained with VN soldiers. The 'easiness' of the women there is often mentioned.

Nah, you started a thread because of and about hospitals. Here, I was triggered by the ceremony at the monument this morning (which I still don't know why it was going on today, perhaps someone can tell me?), and the comment from the person I spoke with. I'm more interested in the perception from the population in this thread, than on government to government relations.violet wrote:The thread on Cambodian and Vietnamese relations would have been a good place for this

I don’t think I have ever heard a Khmer friend of mine say anything positive about Vietnam. They are either apathetic or vitriolic.
If a child is naughty then ‘they are from Vietnam’
If you have diarrhoea then ‘your stomach is from Vietnam’
If something breaks then ‘it was made in Vietnam’
Obvs is a bit of light hearted mockery there but it is based on a real prejudice IMO.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Defence funded the upgrade and repair of all the monuments (US$7.8 million) last year to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

My VN ex-wife lived in Cambodia for 7 years, made many Khmer friends and had never had a bad word said to her.

I could believe that. But I would also expect that there was plenty of unfounded gossip and innuendo spoken behind her backHanno wrote:My VN ex-wife lived in Cambodia for 7 years, made many Khmer friends and had never had a bad word said to her.
- mostly likely by people who didn’t know her.
Have you ever been served in a shop after an African? They are pleasant enough to their face, but when they leave the sniping starts.

No, I started a thread on cambodian and vietnamese relations, prompted by and including reference to a hospital, but inviting other examples, exactly like this one

Is it really that important? If you are so proud of your thread then keen posting in it and drum up some attention. AFAIR - it fizzled out talking about Generals in the army.violet wrote: No, I started a thread on cambodian and vietnamese relations, prompted by and including reference to a hospital, but inviting other examples, exactly like this one
Don’t take it personally V, it doesn’t mean you are a bad person.
