32 US embassy staff fired for underage porn
(Reuters) - The United States embassy in Cambodia has fired 32 people after they were allegedly caught sharing pornographic material in a non-official chat group, several sources familiar with the matter said on Friday.
Four sources told Reuters that pornographic videos and photographs, including some featuring people under the age of 18, were shared in a Facebook Messenger chat group.
...
He said the 32 embassy workers included Cambodians and Cambodian-Americans. Many were guards and some were clerical staff. There were no diplomats among them, they said.

If it was a non-official FB chat group, what business is it of the American Embassy ?

Dont you think they should take a stand against people sharing pornographic images of people under the age of 18?Playboy wrote:If it was a non-official FB chat group, what business is it of the American Embassy ?

That part yes, if they were indeed under 18 then they should be arrested and prosecuted.violet wrote:Dont you think they should take a stand against people sharing pornographic images of people under the age of 18?Playboy wrote:If it was a non-official FB chat group, what business is it of the American Embassy ?

32 is a lot of employees. They say no “diplomats” but someone should find out how many Americans were involved, did it include marines, law enforcement attached, IT guys, etc. Because “not diplomats” is pretty broad and could include Americans in interesting roles.

If they were all Khmer or Khmericans, they probably did not hold very interesting roles.gavinmac wrote:32 is a lot of employees. I’ll bet those sacked don’t appreciate what the big issue is.
Some locals I know share awful stuff in WhatsApp or messenger groups and it’s all just a big joke to them.

We’ll all know what the roles they were in as they’ll be advertising for 32 new staff soon enough!

Would it be sanctimonious for me to suggest that dozens of presumably male American embassy workers felt emboldened to share pornographic images of victimized women and girls with their co-workers, because the embassy itself doesn’t even prohibit its personnel from visiting bars involved in the business of prostituting young Cambodian women?
The embassy could have adopted a zero tolerance culture on the objectification and victimization of vulnerable women years ago, and it didn’t, and perhaps this scandal is the natural result.
If it’s OK for American diplomats to patronize Street 104 hooker bars and get in late night punch ups at the notorious Golden Sorya Mall and cover it up, then why wouldn’t other
embassy workers think sharing this type of porn in a mass co-workers Facebook group is “no big deal”?
I also find the US Embassy’s response to the press of “We can’t comment it’s confidential” to be quite disappointing and contrary to American ideals of an open government. The names of low level workers fired for something like this may be confidential, but otherwise no good comes from trying to cover this up and acting like it didn’t happen. This is an opportunity for the embassy to commit to a zero tolerance policy and explain why it had to fire about 5% of its workforce, and get the message out to Cambodians and the rest of the world that the embassy became aware of unacceptable conduct and took strong corrective action. Instead, they are acting like cowards, as is their wont.

It's a bizarre response for sure. I think we haven't heard the last of it though.gavinmac wrote:This is an opportunity for the embassy to commit to a zero tolerance policy and explain why it had to fire about 5% of its workforce, and get the message out to Cambodians and the rest of the world that the embassy became aware of unacceptable conduct and took strong corrective action. Maybe we have because there are only two English newspapers left and they are not known for dogged follow up on stories of interest to expats.epidemiks wrote:It's a bizarre response for sure. Was this just a private chat with 32 members or an actual Facebook “group” ? If it was a group they should try to at least get the name of the group. Was it “Embassy Dudes Luv Teen Ass 4Eva”? Come on, at least give us the name.

Those sacked will be mightily pissed off. Those security and driving jobs at embassies are prime jobs for not so educated Khmers. I guess they will all have to become Grab drivers.

I read it as being a group within messenger.gavinmac wrote:Maybe we have because there are only two English newspapers left and they are not known for dogged follow up on stories of interest to expats.epidemiks wrote:It's a bizarre response for sure. Not to worry about lack of English papers. CEO are likely on the case.
