Knives above sleeping childrens’ heads
Apparently the nanny is putting a knife surrounded by tissue on top of baby’s head to help it sleep... WTF!?

She must be a traditional lass from the countryside, most modern city girls do this with a pair of scissors these days.FatherTime wrote:Apparently the nanny is putting a knife surrounded by tissue on top of baby’s head to help it sleep... WTF!?

Sharp objects are for keeping the ghosts away. The red cross on the forehead is some bullshit too.

Good advice. It’s the wife’s job to talk to the nanny anyways.Alexandra wrote:Sharp objects are for keeping the ghosts away. The red cross on the forehead is some bullshit too.

I texted a Western educated Khmer about this. This was her response:gavinmac wrote:What the fuck?? Cambodian babies sleep with knives?FatherTime wrote:Apparently the nanny is putting a knife surrounded by tissue on top of baby’s head to help it sleep... WTF!?

Normally you see toddlers wake up very often or not sound asleep. If it happens use knife or scissor bend around with tissue or small piece of cloth to prevent the unintentional cut.
The belief is the old mother or other spirit near by or in the house come to play with him and we use it to scare them away.
It sometimes work really well but you have to be very cautious.

What the fuck? Can we get a thread on this? It's bad enough the have newborns wearing necklaces and sleeping with stuffed animals and pillows and shit. Knives?
Do Western fathers allow this? I can't imagine any Westerner allowing his infant to sleep with a knife. Except Ricecakes.

You get your knickers in twist over a pair of wrapoed up blunted scissors ?gavinmac wrote:What the fuck? Can we get a thread on this? It's bad enough the have newborns wearing necklaces and sleeping with stuffed animals and pillows and shit. Knives?

Is that more dangerous than keeping loaded guns in drawers and closets for kids to shoot their siblings, like in some American families ?

Come on we don't keep guns in children's beds in the USA. They are on the nightstand.
Did your kids sleep with knives in their beds? I want everyone polled on this.

I put my foot down when she started having our son sleep with the expensive Japanese brand knives. He could have damaged the knives.

Same here. I told her she'd misunderstood me when I had mentioned the pleasure of having sharp kids, and that being on cutting edge of education was a metaphor.
There are other ways with which to ensure a child turns out intelligent. For example, an expectant mother can eat a goose egg during pregnancy.

So I came home and found it was “above” his head in the crib, a few cm away, and not “on top of”. This seems to be a super common belief here, as every Cambodian I’ve asked is like “yes, this is normal”.
Also, my nanny’s name is Srey Pii. I’m not sure what happened to Srey Muoy.

Yeah, don't tink too mut man. Well, at least not until the kid stabs himself or sumting, but then you can follow certain other procedures. Like burying the little bugger in sand etc..
