Over 50 yr old expat marriage to Khmer.
Digging up this old chestnut again from posts a few years ago.
We live in Cambodia.
Anyone anymore up to date experience.I am over 50 and been with my Khmer partner for many years and we are considering marrying in Singapore,Thailand or wherever is the least complicated.
Info on documents needed and any requirements, likely problems etc.We have both been married before, she has a divorce certificate from some 20 years ago.Would this be sufficient or would she need a letter from the relevant authorities to say she is still single.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Find a country that doesn't require you to have legalized documents from the MoFA, because there's no way your partner will obtain those. If you find a country that will accept documents from the local authorities like Sangkat you will be able to go ahead.

Go to Hong Kong. Process described here: http://walkjivefly.com/2017/02/getting- ... hong-kong/
The information was still correct in February 2018, probably still is, but check on the Hong Kong immigration website https://www.immd.gov.hk/eng/marriage/Re ... riage.html

Forget Singapore. They do not like foreign couples marrying in their country. Trust me. You can have all the documentation and they will come up with some excuse or, as in our case, flat out lie to you. They are inherently racist.
There was another couple there the same time as us (Brit and Philippine I think) who had the same issues.
Hong Kong is the way to go but you still may not be able to convert your foreign marriage certificate at MoFA.

Because the Cambodian government has an active policy to prevent Cambodians from marrying abroad, unless there's already been a legal marriage in Cambodia. This means the MoFA or embassies will only legalize marriage certificates, but not proof of being single / widow / divorced etc.gavinmac wrote:Why is there no way she'll obtain those?Kachang wrote:Find a country that doesn't require you to have legalized documents from the MoFA, because there's no way your partner will obtain those.
MoFA don’t issue the celibacy certificate (which is what is needed for overseas and local weddings) that is for the Sangkat to provide.
The Cambodian embassy where you want to get married will notarise it, or at least they do in Singapore.
There’s been people who have got it transferred but as ever in Cambodia it’s likkey to change constantly.

If you are both happy, content and trust one another...why the need to get legally married? Serious question.
If it's a case of your missus claiming that it's to save face, then that's bs because she's already "spoilt", and marrying you won't change that. (Apologies if that sounds cruel, but it's the way things work here).

I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.
My wife got her “Available to marry” certificate from the sangkat where her family book is in Svay Rieng.
That has nothing to do with the age of the guy she wants to marry.

Because it can come in handy for (eg: Schengen) visa applications, passing on nationality to children, anything else official (outside of Cambodia) which is easier if you're married.PSD_Kiwi wrote:If you are both happy, content and trust one another...why the need to get legally married? I didn't think of this when we went to Hong Kong. Might be worth doing if they'll do it.YaTingPom wrote:The Cambodian embassy where you want to get married will notarise it, or at least they do in Singapore.

It’s needed for a Cambodian to marry in any country, apart from HK it seems, to someone of any age.

Yea, that document is easy enough to obtain, it's getting it translated and certified by the MoFAIC or Cambodian Embassy abroad which is the problem, basically they won't certify/notarise it.GMJS-440 wrote:My wife got her “Available to marry” certificate from the sangkat where her family book is in Svay Rieng.

Fair one, like I said, it was a serious question, and you gave a serious answerwalkjivefly wrote:Because it can come in handy for (eg: Schengen) visa applications, passing on nationality to children, anything else official (outside of Cambodia) which is easier if you're marriedPSD_Kiwi wrote:If you are both happy, content and trust one another...why the need to get legally married? Depends on the embassy. They will in Singapore for example.PSD_Kiwi wrote:Yea, that document is easy enough to obtain, it's getting it translated and certified by the MoFAIC or Cambodian Embassy abroad which is the problem, basically they won't certify/notarise it.GMJS-440 wrote:My wife got her “Available to marry” certificate from the sangkat where her family book is in Svay Rieng.
