Over 50 yr old expat marriage to Khmer.
My Khmer wife and I were married in the U.S. We came back to Cambodia and took our marriage license to the MoFA. They gave us some paperwork to take to our local Sangkat. The Sangkat signed off and we received our Cambodian marriage license. I was over 50 at the time. We did this about a year ago.

why does it need to be certified?PSD_Kiwi wrote:Yea, that document is easy enough to obtain, it's getting it translated and certified by the MoFAIC or Cambodian Embassy abroad which is the problem, basically they won't certify/notarise it.GMJS-440 wrote:My wife got her “Available to marry” certificate from the sangkat where her family book is in Svay Rieng.
That has nothing to do with the age of the guy she wants to marry.
we got married in oz with the sangkat issued one and nothing further..

@BBB...Some countries require it to be certified, not all.
I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.
When you first posted about that I was sceptical, but further research confirmed that it was indeed possible and I even shared that info with several couples who successfully managed to do the same.LoneStar wrote:My Khmer wife and I were married in the U.S. We came back to Cambodia and took our marriage license to the MoFA. However, reports from the last couple of months from a few couples who have also tried indicate that it is no longer possible...you got yours done at the right time.

What's the benefit of having a Cambodian marriage license if married abroad and what is the fate of those couples who can no longer get it?

What would the situation be in Australia? Surely a Khmer who is a permanent resident or citizen can marry whoever she chooses and it will be recognized.
Otherwise it must be a breach of international human rights.

my undestanding is that a foreign marriage, ie a marriage in a different country is usually recognised if it conforms to both local laws and the laws of the country from where the person originates...

Nothing so interesting about that. Other country's official just could not know that cambodian police certificate and translation is actually real without legalization of known cambodian official.badboybubby wrote:thought it might be something like that..PSD_Kiwi wrote:@BBB...Some countries require it to be certified, not all.

firstly it's not a police certificate..it's a sangkat certificate which by definition is official (government)...secondly governments usually only accept accredited translations...raendi wrote:Nothing so interesting about that. a certification is a form of authentication...
an official document shouldn't need further authentication...
