I've often wondered what would happen if I gave three randomly chosen bargirls a piece of paper and pen and told them I'd give five dollars to whoever could draw the best map of Cambodia, with the provinces shown? I know Cambodians can't read maps, but can they draw them?

Give just about any American that test with a blank map of the US and you'll get similar results. Sad but true.gavinmac wrote:I've often wondered what would happen if I gave three randomly chosen bargirls a piece of paper and pen and told them I'd give five dollars to whoever could draw the best map of Cambodia, with the provinces shown? I seem to remember that Jimmy Kimmel had done this on the streets of LA one time, was pretty hilarious.McPhisto wrote:Give just about any American that test with a blank map of the US and you'll get similar results. I think the states should change the voting laws to allow just kids to vote lol. I know it's not a real representation of Americans but between this, Trump and the Kylie Jenner GoFundMe thing I'm losing hope for my former neighbors.gavinmac wrote:New video!Gardiguy wrote:I seem to remember that Jimmy Kimmel had done this on the streets of LA one time, was pretty hilarious.
And you think someone couldn't perform the same experiment in Canada and not get nearly identical, embarassing results?Gardiguy wrote:I think the states should change the voting laws to allow just kids to vote lol. Of course, the kind of people who stop to do these kind of "vox pops" are not likely to be that smart anyway, and they likely edited out most of the semi-intelligent replies. Then the kid at the end nailed it. I have always had maps on the walls at home so my kid can point out nearly any country, not all families are like that though. I believe most people are only interested in their immediate surroundings and there's no need for them to know any superfluous information. This of course leads to situations like the one which led Elon Musk to label a diver who lived in Thailand as a "pedo" because that's all his localized brain can take in. Thailand + foreigner = pervert. Not Thailand + diver = good spot to ply your trade.McPhisto wrote:And you think someone couldn't perform the same experiment in Canada and not get nearly identical, embarassing results?Gardiguy wrote:I think the states should change the voting laws to allow just kids to vote lol. Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
The diver in question is English and a recognised expert cave diver. He was requested to travel from UK, not dragged off a bar girl in Phuket.
I seriously think Musk mean 'torpedo guy'' and the press have run away with it.

Having taught Secondary Geography for a long time, both here and in Australia, my experience is that map knowledge by students in both countries is generally abysmal, but far worse here. It is not simply confined to Khmers, as I teach many other Asian nationalities. I have had World and Cambodian maps installed in every classroom, but it hasn't helped much at all.
My experiences as an expat in SE Asia for more than 20 years have led me to the conclusion that Asians almost totally lack a sense of direction or location. None of my students here have been able to identify basic compass points, like North or East, when asked. When I first commenced working in PP, another teacher challenged me to ask my students to state their home address-house number, street and district. He correctly predicted that none of them would know any of those details. The usual response is: near Tuol Sleng, near Riverside, near Aeon Mall etc. Anyone using a motodop, tuk-tuk or taxi here will have noticed the problem, but my students are from the highly educated elite.
These comments should not be interpreted as typical Western arrogance or patronisation. I have also noticed that other Asian sensory perceptions, particularly sight, hearing and smell, are far superior to ours. I think the differences have probably evolved out of different historical needs and experiences.

@Gilmore, I would disagree with your last statement, most Asians seem to be deaf, their sight is often dismal, and I am not sure what makes you think that they have a better sense of smell.
However, I totally agree with the first part. Most SE Asians cannot even place neighboring countries or even provinces within their own countries. Though Vietnamese do know their street addresses. In defense of the Khmer: what do you do if you do not have a street address? The street I live in in Siem Reap has no name and no house numbers.

Iβve found that βrightβ and βleftβ knowledge is shocking. But, more so for country folk, compass direction is well known.
Many times I have been out in the sticks and got directions like: go to the crossroads and turn west, or turn south after the school.
When asked to clarify do they mean left or right, Iβm met with a blank look then a debate between a few folk as to which one is right which just confuses the directions completely.
City folk generally arenβt great at compass points - nor indeed lefts or rights.
And I donβt think they smell better than us, farts excluded, I reckon I smell better than most.
