4 Rivers Floating lodge floated away
It's easy to get distracted by the flooding on National Rd 4 and in Kampot, but it's have real effects elsewhere as well.
Enter 4 Rivers Floating Lodge. 4 Rivers pushes itself as a luxurious and private resort on the tranquil Tatai River, with 12 private floating bungalows. Here is one description: "Situated along the Tatai River and overlooking the Cardamom Mountains, a peaceful and private sanctuary awaits at this luxury eco lodge. Built using only eco-friendly materials, cocoon in comfort in of the 12 floating tents, each with its own private terrace. Kayak down the river, have a relaxing massage, and capture the beauty of one of the world’s largest rainforests."
At several hundred dollars a night, it is one of the pricier options to stay in Cambodia.
Or was. It has been completely washed away in the rains of last week. The twelve floating bungalows, the sewage treatment facility, the solar panels (edited, as I've been told the generators are on the island), everything. Here is was the location now looks like:
Here are some of them floating down the river:
And here they are, hauling a few out 14 km down from where the resort was:
This is probably a $1 million loss for them (not including the opportunity costs of not being able to operate). I do not think they were insured (although I could be mistaken), as they had no actual land based structures, and the pilings they used were obviously constructed without doing any proper survey of river currents. This was a massive F-up, which heavy rains of course played their part, but still may have been avoidable. Also, not everything has been recovered yet, including the sewage treatment which is still missing.
(Edit: See below for their press release regarding this.)

did any greenies get washed away too?, serves 'em right for shitting in the river.
doesnt look to be much evidence of unusual flooding from the pictures so perhaps just an advertising stunt if not an insurance job

Sounds completely irresponsible but still not completely surprising that something like this would happen.
It is surprising that there were no guests amongst those involved.

Thanks for sharing that.valentinsuteu wrote:you can see our official press release here:
It appears to be your assessment that Cambodian Tatai Hydropower LTD is to be blamed and liable for the damage, as they released water without properly notifying you.
It's my understanding that the commune leader had already advised all accommodations along the Tatai River to not accept bookings as traveling by boat in the river would be very dangerous during this time, and this is why there were no guests there. I also understand that the accumulation of rainwater overnight caused very strong currents plus strong winds, so surely this wasn't solely related to the release of dam water. Had you known of the release of water, what would you have done differently to protect the structures?
Other than the attachments to the shore, what else was put in place to structurally protect the resort? Were there pilings in place? It appears to me that you intend to take this to court, so I am sure that if that does happen the hrydo plant will request to see any feasibility study of water currents - do you have that?
Lastly, are you insured?
Also, on a side note, I'm glad to hear that no one was hurt! That certainly sounded terrifying for the staff that were there at the time.
Any guesses why nobody else in the world thought this would be a good idea? People have enough problems on land, you're telling me that you want to battle water and then sue when it doesn't behave like you want. What else will you sue, the wind? How about gravity?4 Rivers Floating Lodge is the first tented floating lodge in the world
Lodge on the WATERRR....Float away, float float away, sue the guys who did this!

Still at least it was just a few tents, it could have been worse
Hundreds of people are missing and an unknown number dead after a dam collapsed in south-east Laos, state media reported.
The collapse at the hydroelectric dam in Attapu province late on Monday sent flash floods through six villages, Laos News Agency said.
"Several human lives" were lost and "several hundreds of people [are] missing", it added.
More than 6,600 people have been made homeless by the floods, reports said.
The reason for the Xepian-Xe Nam Noy dam's collapse is not clear.

Looks peaceful. How much are they renting out those floating bungalows for? Is there room service?
$1 million damage for a few (okay, a dozen) tents? Seriously?
