I’m sure most of you have noticed that loads of the more impartial news websites are blocked as of this morning.
I guess this is just for the election period and I’m sure it will be justified with comments about not allowing anyone to influence the election. But, has this been done before on such a scale? I don’t think it has, except for the attempt to block the Cambodia Daily website a few months back (maybe just a dry run for this).
So what do you reckon:
- is this just a shot across the bow of these news companies? Get in line or we’ll cut you off
- will it have any real impact? Which voters actually get their news from these websites? Are there Khmer news sites cut off?
- what about expat forums? Like this and TOF? Concerned about this development?
I’m sure online advertisers are watching this with interest.

And will it have much of an impact if Facebook and Twitter are unaffected?
This is not surprising in one party democracies but I think the expat forums will be ok for now, though it might be the only way to censure that fucking Guano Gomer

All good with the PPP in Saigon Whatever that means. Seems a bit odd to be censoring your own website.

I wonder why, and I wonder when a foreign based NGO will start to offer free VPN services to Cambodians to sanction these silly actions.
Cambodian providers have been ordered to block certain IP's. The CPP can't order Vietnamese ISP's to do the same.Oldnews wrote:All good with the PPP in Saigon Whatever that means. Seems a bit odd to be censoring your own website.

This is kinda funny.
I decided to translate some of the NEC SMS’s I’ve received over the past few days - just out of interest.
Yesterday I got this one:
‘NEC has given permission to 924 reporters from 82 organizations and internationally 203 people from 66 organizations to attend the 2018 elections.’
It’s a pity the published news reports can’t be read.

HE NEC meets with a delegation of high-level international observers from the European Union at 10:30 am on 28-7-18 to learn about the election process.

‘Bollocks, that election thing is happening soon - I guess we better meet with some foreigners to see how it should work’
