Chinese Gambling Boom in Kampot
BBC Article 16/9/2018
Kampot is one of Cambodia's cultural jewels, but as George Styllis writes, a flood of Chinese gambling money is making residents of this small sleepy town nervous.
During colonial rule - from 1863 to 1953 - the French would retreat to the lush highlands of Bokor mountain above Kampot to escape the stifling heat.
There they established an enclave, with a church, a post office and a magnificent hotel.
In the tumult of civil war and genocide, the hotel fell to ruin, leaving only black cavernous windows and a gruesome grey exterior.

I thought that no gambling was permitted in Kampot, apart from Bokor?
This article does start on Kampot but switches over to the Sihanoukville situation.
We will see what happens.

Another freelance journo regurgitating locals speculation......
Hard to say what they'll do wrt Casinos in Kampot. The 200km from Naga exclusion zone until 2035 (bokor and borders exempt) is pretty much irrelevant when you consider SHV will have up to 100 casinos. Whats another 5 or 10 casinos in Kampot going to matter to Naga, hence it wouldn't take much compensation to cancel that exclusion zone imo.
My guess is the Chinese will initially open hotels and restaurants in Kampot and Kep to service regular Chinese tourists and those that are bored and/or broke after a few days on Bokor.
However, money talks and this is Cambodia, so I wouldn't rule out a deal to allow Casinos in Kampot town before 2035.

I don’t think the Chinese (PRC) are that interested in Kampot in the same way as SHV, or Otres.
I know the Kampotians think it’ll be ruined, as it’s already started with the refugees from SHV, and the prices have increased but that’s mainly because of panic buying and speculation.
At least I bloody hope so.

Probably just build an airport on top of Bokor quickest way to get the gambling jet set up there... no way bussing them from SHV airport or bussing up the hill from a cruise ship... maybe a fleet of helicopters..
BTW the few ex-shv expats well out numbered by all the already entrenched lot some of whom are already complaining about how busy it is here - because of the increase over the last few years of Cambodians moving to town. Cars everywhere now. Construction going on around almost every road in and out of the town...

I do think there could be a great piece of China’s growing influence, etc, especially following John Oliver’s piece on China which was pretty good, but this just scratches the surface.

Went to Bokor in 2017, must have seen the last of the rundown hotel, from the pics online, it looks like they restored it almost to it's original state from before the KR, just like many other historic buildings in the area. Glad to see them keeping those historic pieces, and not tearing them down, it adds to the charm of the place. As for the Chinese, they've been in the area for ever, as I understand reading up on the local history, I'd hope they would appreciate the unique atmosphere around Kampot/Kep in the future.
Apparently there are lots of Chinese townhouses but I’ve not found anyone who knows which are which (as apposed to French colonial).
Maybe the French ones all have a hidden room in the attic. (As apposed to Belgian ones with hidden rooms in the cellar).

Here's an excellent thread on Kampot and Bokor Mountain. Hasn't been updated since April. If anyone goes up that way soon it would be great for some new photos/an update.

Investors Look To Kampot For Profit
Sihanoukville is famous for its property market boom, as tens of thousands of Chinese are doing business, investing heavily in the Cambodian coastal province and pushing land prices to rise to the highest levels.
This has had a positive impact on the land sector in Kampot province, giving the province economic potential. Particularly, the price of land is also increasing, especially around the areas of development projects by the Royal Government, such as construction of international trading centers , the international port, land in coastal areas and along the riverfront.
A land trader said the price of land in Kampot is currently very strong, especially around the key areas.
He said that for land in the Prek Kampong Bay area, which has a great potential for tourism and land, is still continuing to rise. Last year prices were approximately 25 to 30 dollars per square meter but now land in the area has picked up significantly to more than $ 130 – $ 150.
What makes the land so expensive is that foreigners are investing more and doing business.
Also, land is being seen as an investment opportunity. Particularly, the land along the national road from Kampot town to Kep is still low, at $150/ square meter, while the price of land a near the project of the International Seaport International is more than $ 300 / square meter.
Taing Hour, general manager of AMATAK Property Service Co., Ltd., also acknowledges that the price of land in Kampot is increasing. The Royal Government has announced the construction of an international deep sea port and the expansion of National Road No 3 from Phnom Penh to Kampot.
“When this infrastructure is built, the price of land there will be even higher,” she said. With Sihanoukville, the price of land in the province is already high, so investors will move to the area which has a similar geographical location, especially in Kampot province, which is located along the coast from Preah Sihanouk province.
However, she also warned that for investment to be profitable for traders as well as for citizens to consider carefully before buying land. You should look at the geographical area, check out the proper documentation, avoid risk after the purchase, she advised.

Bringing the news. You stay classy, nas, Cambodia.
So in summary. A real estate bod says it’s good to buy land because other people that listened have already bought in the hope of making profit.
Sage advice.

The last time I was up on Bokor Mountain I went to the casino and it looked like a North Korean prison. The food sucked and the casino was depressing.
On a side note, the Le Bokor Palace looks great!

Visited Kampot recently, was very impressed on how the old hotel has been refurbished, but at $400 per night was empty when I was there, Went into the new casino whilst I was there invested $20 played Blackjack for about an hour we were the only ones there of course lost the lot, but cheap entertainment
If the BBC said it was Tuesday, I'd check the calendar.
