Common things that still excite expats
I feel like there are relatively common things here that expats of even 10+ years still get overly excited about and need to comment on. Some include:
- Monsoon rains and flooded streets
- Snakes
- Monkeys
- Crazy drivers
- The Chinese
- Fertilized duck eggs

Sorry.
None of that list excites me. Hell it doesn't even rate a mention, bar bitching about the drainage and the Chinese influx.

Note to self: Must be nice to morons.
That’s because you’re a tourist.LaudJohn wrote:Sorry.

These are just something you have to deal with. I quite like a bit of rain, as long as I'm not in the middle of a journey. Nobody gets all that exited about floods or rain, it's just day to day stuff for much of the year.
- Snakes
It's pretty rare to ever see one, even if there are plenty about. I find wildlife fascinating though so have been quite excited when some neighbors caught a 3 meter python or when a relation had to smash a Malayan Krait to death in the front yard. I'm from a country that doesn't have any snakes.
- Monkeys
There are very few around the capital now, but I lived with them around for years and just found them to be annoyances. I got excited when I spotted some Gibbons on MST a month or two back, just because I've never seen them in the city before.
- Crazy drivers
There's so much terrible driving that most of it wouldn't get much more than a raised eyebrow or mumbled curse from me these days, and I forget about most of it soon enough. Real crazy drivers who race around drunk and smash into barriers etc are always remarkable, wherever you are.
- The Chinese
Always have been and always will be important in the region. Recent developments have surprised many but I haven't heard many excited conversations about them, more just a general expression of malaise.
- Fertilized duck eggs
I bought some by accident on a dodgy as fuck St 70 (that I'd been brought to at 2AM and wanted to get back out of)when I was here first, I'd never even heard of them before. They looked horrible when I cracked them so I threw them in a ditch. I tried to eat some when I was starving and stuck in Neak Loung at 2 AM years later, but I just gagged them up. Since then I never ate them, even though I've been in the company of others who were enjoying them countless times. I certainly don't get excited by them, they are just there.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

The heat, don't let it swing below 19c, my current freezing point.
The traffic, will never cease to keep me on the edge of reality.
The gawkers, friendlies, coughs, chicks and chinks, a loaf of bread.
