I thought it would at least be some cliché like "looks towards China". But the problem with China on this one is they aren't the retail market that Europe is for the garment industry.
Things are changing, while Europe is in a slow financial decline and the trend is to buy less clothing, China is getting richer and there are 1.3 billion of them.
None but ourselves can free our mind.
The medium income is still low overall at around $2400. Outside the big cities esp Shanghai and Beijing the majority of people are dirt poor.Visser wrote:Things are changing, while Europe is in a slow financial decline and the trend is to buy less clothing, China is getting richer and there are 1.3 billion of them.
That's still about 80-100M people with disposable income of over 10k/year, most of them keen on relocating outside of China.
Indeed. I remember one fun fact saying that there are more poor people (under $x per year) than the population of Europe, or maybe the USA or both, or something.... I've not done research.logos wrote:The medium income is still low overall at around $2400. Who are you and what have you done with playboy!?Playboy wrote:The Cambodian Garment Sector employs nearly 900,000 workers. Mostly semi-skilled labour from poor provincial families.
It represents around 86% of people employed in the Industrial Sector overall.
It is the only sector in Cambodia that has specific, and enforced, Labour Laws and minimums wages and working conditions.
Over 45% of its annual US$8B revenue comes from the EU.
The vast majority of these factories are foreign owned, with foreign investment capital. Thus granting them greater flexibility, and speed, in relocating their production centres to another country.
If the advantages of the EBA are removed, it is not the 'corrupt politicians' that the EU is aiming at that will suffer.
Nice work there by the EU in screwing over the poor.
I hope you are not taking his dismembered body back to Saudi Arabia in Vuitton tote bags.

That brings up a good point. I hadn't really thought about what it would mean with Brexit and the EBA; presumably come Brexit the EBA between Cambodia and the UK ceases -- has anyone heard about talks between the UK and Cambodia? I think the main company (off the top of my head) that would be affected would be Marks & Spencer.
and Tesco, Asda make 'George' range of clothing here too, but they are part of Walmart.Miguelito wrote:That brings up a good point. There was some news about a minister visiting a month or 2 back, which Freshnews made into a big thing. In May...
Then in august: https://www.phnompenhpost.com/national/ ... nt-affairsCambodia's Senior Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on May 29 met with British Ambassador William Longhurst. According to Senior Minister Prak Sokhon, he appreciated the active participation of the British government in enhancing bilateral cooperation and enhancing relations between the two countries.
In discussions and discussions on bilateral cooperation, the Senior Minister and the Ambassador highly appreciated the rapid increase in trade volume between the two countries to $ 1000 million and the increase of British tourist arrivals to 171,000 by 2017.
The ambassador highlighted that the UK is a good friend of Cambodia and has shown great interest in the growth of all sectors in Cambodia, especially in the economy. He spoke on the UK government's commitment to continue to provide assistance to Cambodia in the area of mine action and to continue to promote economic and investment cooperation. He also said that there will be a visit of a senior State Department official to Cambodia in the future.
The UK’s Minister of State for Asia and the Pacific, Mark Field, has called on the Kingdom to release former opposition leader Kem Sokha and remedy an alleged backsliding of democracy.
However, responding to such comments, Council of Ministers spokesman Phay Siphan said the fate of Cambodia is to be decided by the Kingdom itself.
Field’s first visit to the Kingdom will see him having meetings until Thursday. He will hold talks with top government officials, civil society members and the private sector.
Wednesday saw him at talks with Prime Minister-designate Hun Sen, Minister of Interior Sar Kheng, Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and Education Minister Hang Chuon Naron, where discussions centred around the July 29 national polls and bilateral ties between the two nations.
The ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) won a landslide victory in one of the most contentious national elections in recent memory due to the non-participation of the court-dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) and its voter boycott calls.

Can't blame the EU for Cambodia being extremely inefficient......Playboy wrote:True, their is no other options for EBA clearance into Europe.
However, the other options avaliable besides Cambodia as a manufacturing base have lower minimum salaries, lower energy costs, and much fewer public holidays/overtime rates.
If the EBA benefits are removed, then there are very few reasons to remain in Cambodia for these companies.
If EBA is dropped Cambodia has to compete with more efficient countries and it simply can't. But that's no reason to keep EBA in place forever. There's conditions to be granted EBA and Cambodia has violated those, time after time.

EU officials: Ending EBA an 18-month procedure
That's odd because what I posted yesterday (Document 32012R0978) states it as being a 12 month period, not 18?
4 (b)
state that the Commission will monitor and evaluate the situation in the beneficiary country concerned for six months from the date of publication of the notice.
8. Within six months from the expiry of the period referred to in point (b) of paragraph 4 the Commission shall decide:
(a)
to terminate the temporary withdrawal procedure; or
(b)
to temporarily withdraw the tariff preferences provided under the preferential arrangements referred to in Article 1(2).
There's a lot of reading but article 19 seem to cover it.
