Hope and Anchor Hotel
Hope and Anchor Hotel
Anyone know what became of Peter that used to run the Hope and Anchor hotel on the riverside. I think it's now Paddy Rice and has been for some time. Peter was from Hull and was getting on and had infant twins when I left PP in 2010. If anyone has any news on him would appreciate it.

He opened the York Guesthouse in 2011 or so on Street 172. No idea if it's still open.

Yes I remember that. Must have been before Nov 2010 because I went to the opening of York, and Nov 2010 was when I split. That was in that old colonial building on the corner down from the Gym Bar. But you haven't seen him or anything, right? I don't think he had the money to keep that place going. Plus 7 years is an eternity for an ageing Phnom Penh expatriate...

Well, usually I say stuff like that.backhome wrote: Plus 7 years is an eternity for an ageing Phnom Penh expatriate...
I haven't seen Peter since I stayed at Home and Anchor in 2006 or so.
He was last discussed here:

Not heard of him for a while. The bar on the corner was called Hope and Anchor II, not The York, that being a guest house on 172.
I think the dispute with the landlord at Hope and Anchor cost him a fair bit, hopefully he managed to recover.
I know he had other property investments in the city as well as land in the country, around Battambong I think.
Last siting I heard of was of him in The Tavern in Bangkok, and his twins tearing up the place (a situation with which I can sympathize).

The whole Hope & Anchor building on the corner of 136 and Sisowath Quay was demolished a few months ago. They are constructing something grand and tall there, looks like they are still at the footings stage.
Yup, and it will be another eyesore to an already pathetic Phnom Penh skyline. Getting worse by the day.Mike Farce wrote: ↑Mon Jan 29, 2024 12:47 amThe whole Hope & Anchor building on the corner of 136 and Sisowath Quay was demolished a few months ago. The "skyline" of 1950s - 1990s shophouses along the Riverside was never of any great architectural merit.frigidaire wrote: ↑Mon Jan 29, 2024 1:23 amYup, and it will be another eyesore to an already pathetic Phnom Penh skyline. Speaking of riverside properties, I do wonder how a shop that sells wooden coffins is able to retain such prime real estate (and presumably make a profit). Odd.
I don’t think it’s odd. They own the property, and sell coffins as their family business. They know they are sitting on a goldmine.MONEYBACKGUARANTEE wrote: ↑Mon Jan 29, 2024 6:31 amSpeaking of riverside properties, I do wonder how a shop that sells wooden coffins is able to retain such prime real estate (and presumably make a profit). It's the type of business that is garunteed to have a never ending supply of customers until their dieing day.Coffinseller wrote: ↑Mon Jan 29, 2024 7:02 amI don’t think it’s odd. Couldn't they sell something else? I mean there are probably more tourists that pass through that area than any other part of the city. How many tourists are coming to Cambodia to buy a coffin? Would you sell gravel on the Champs-Élysées? If the property is a "goldmine" then why don't they sell it and hawk their wooden coffins from some other location?Coffinseller wrote: ↑Mon Jan 29, 2024 7:02 amI don’t think it’s odd. Perhaps they simply like running their business from this location and don't feel the need to change the current arrangement's.
I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.
