I would've hoped two newlyweds would've had more to say to one another.ricecakes wrote:When we were back at Xmas we stayed at a very popular GH that is frequented by a variety of local expats who go there to drink and swim etc. Id get into conversations with some of the ones i did not know personally and they'd ask where I live and I'd say Hanoi and stay schtum to start with . We'd get into a talk about Phnom Penh and I'd then have to listen to their encyclopedic advice on how to survive in PP and general knowledge on all things Cambodia all gleaned in their last few years of living here. To shut them the fuck up id eventually have to drop in that id just lived in PP for 10 years, married locally, still come back for work several times a year or to tend our properties etc. For added effect i'd then have a chat to the lasses working there in Khmer.
I preferred drinking with the likes of LPB and RobW where we do not have to talk much if at all . Although RobW and I did smash a bottle of whiskey together at a wedding a few weeks back which was nice and we conversed at length... " ice old chap ?" "no thanks" "another old chap" "yes please" etc etc
I pretty much gave up talking to any foreigner that doesn't come with a first hand reference many years ago.
Perhaps I'm losing out on amazing experiences, but more than likely saving myself hours of ennui and probably the odd bop on the nose in the era of the perpetually offended.
Exceptions are people over 70, because they are often interesting and New York Jews because they often make me laugh.

Edit for clarity. I wasn't fishing for inclusiin. I was referencing what seemed might be a tale

RobW and I recently met an interesting and amusing South African. It involved lots of drinks and the hilarious use of the word 'Bliks' in a strong South African accent.violet wrote:Playboy wrote:You forgot South Africans from your listRobW wrote:I pretty much gave up talking to any foreigner that doesn't come with a first hand reference many years ago.

These youngsters coming here with their man buns, perfectly manicured beards , 24 hour internet, and de-constructed cappachinos. Pfft. I shit 'em. I said i shit 'em.
Do any of you remember mud roads, not many cars, internet cafe's and the days when gun shots were common in bars?
The youngsters these days. I shit 'em.
I'm currently in the process of drafting up my collected memoirs of my time spent in the KOW. You could call it an autobiography of sorts.
It's gonna be called - 7 Years in Shitsville Snooky to Chinooky.
I'm thinking that when its made into a movie, i will probably play the Brad Pitt character myself.
