The only barang in the village
My FIFO mining mate is building a house 10 KMs north of the Surin border on the thai side.
He says theres another farang out there in the same village but he refuses to socialise
Apparently its common in issan that farangs prefer to be
The only farang in the village.
I would imagine they feel invaded or perhaps jealous that a new dude "taking there spot".
Does it happen in rural cambodia? Or is this only a thai thing??

I sometimes go into bars frequented by other westerners, but choose not to socialise with them, or anyone,...nothing to do with feeling invaded or jealousy, I just think most people are cunts.
Maybe your mate just thinks this other "farang" is a cunt and has no desire to socialise with him.
The last encounter I had with a foreigner in the province reaffirmed my belief that most people.are cunts, drinking case after case but this ballbags didn't even offer to chip in 100 Riel!

I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.

One other problem is how many Barang/Farang's like to take advantage of others. Some people avoid others so they don't have to worry about telling them "No, you can't borrow $5, or my truck or...!" "No, I am really not interested in going into business with you!" And, if you go into a lot of rural areas in America, don't expect to be accepted into the community until you have been there a while and proved yourself to be a decent human being.

If he only chipped in 100 Riel then that would be offensive.PSD_Kiwi wrote:I sometimes go into bars frequented by other westerners, but choose not to socialise with them, or anyone,...nothing to do with feeling invaded or jealousy, I just think most people are cunts.

When I bought our first block of land in Kep over 10 years ago we were the 3rd westerners to buy on a longish road against the hills. Now every fucking French / Belgian and Aussie has bought near us and its like Pitt St when you go out there with whiteys driving up and down an waving. I have to take some blame for this as I introduced a few westerners to the location some years ago when it was ultra cheap . Whilst they are all actually mostly a nice bunch and we share the odd beer etc and it has not done land prices any harm, I prefer to be away from the white masses and to this effect I have zeroed in on a "new" location near Kep where land is cheaper and there are no whiteys.....yet. We are buying a block there hopefully when we are back in Feb.

Kep has always carried a premium for land, especially so nearer the beach/sea. Three years ago it was triple that of Kampot and more expensive than some parts of SHV. Now Kampot is slightly cheaper but not much.
I’d love to buy one of those villa carcasses. We ask once (2015 the wife asked, I was hiding) and it was $350 per sq!
Nice to visit for a day or if you’re of retirement age or have a business but it’s a bit boring for me.

Heading to Angkol? I was also thinking there might be some good value in buying out that way.ricecakes wrote:When I bought our first block of land in Kep over 10 years ago we were the 3rd westerners to buy on a longish road against the hills. There's an unwritten rule among the 3 of us who live in a 10km radius. We meet up for an afternoon every now and then for a few beers and a chat. But none of us are sociable people and have our foibles and are a bit weird in our own ways.
You have to be a little strange to stay in the kingdom full time and for years. Even more so to do it in the countryside.
There's also a strange Frenchman who can'r parlez Anglais, who's ok for up to 3 cans, and a clutch of God types who don't even get a nod in the street.

Massive stalker
Although I spend a lot of time fishing ( inland on the old irrigation lakes ) over Angkol way i do not like the land between the road to Kampong Trach and the pepper farms as it is horrid uninteresting scrub in the middle of nowhere ( abeit with sea views if you were ever to build and put enough levels on your structure ). I was shown a 50x35 for $15k so a nice size but fuck me there was no-one and nothing out there except some sketchy little tin shacks and random trails . The Angkol ocean side is and getting pricey i think . If u r actually looking PM me.
