Please say it’s true - sidewalk tents to be banned
Heard this a few years ago and nothing changed.

It's a directive that gets rolled out ever few years and never seems to have any effect. I'm very much in favor but can't see how it can work just yet. The tents are plain annoying, and have been banned from main thoroughfares for years but still get parked out because there is money in it for all involved.
I work in the central part of the city and it's the worst. Many of the sidewalks are very wide but after 7.30 AM or so they are covered in parked cars, mainly the larger type, so you have to either squeeze between gaps or walk on the road. Stalls and other barriers can be an issue but it's mainly parking. At the same time, parking on the street isn't a great option either as it will only cause more congestion. Especially when the average driver thinks parking means just stopping wherever the hell they like with no regard for anyone else.

Institute for Road Safety deputy director Kong Ratanak said this guideline was nothing new and the implementation of similar laws in the past has proven unsuccessful, adding that in order to stop sidewalk violations, the authorities should find other locations for them to run their businesses.
“In the past, we have seen similar guidelines. I will applaud if the municipal hall is successful, but through past experience, we have hardly seen sidewalk violations decrease

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Over the last few years I've noticed the volume decreasing and the events finishing earlier. That's across the board for birthday parties, weddings, and funerals.
What I've also noticed is a change in the size and type of tents used. Where it use to be a scaffold pole construction with a tent loosely draped over it, there's now more of the purpose built aluminum frame affairs that are a lot bigger ans have service tents that often close off a side street up to a block away from the party.
Noise down, but roads more thoroughly choked. I can't squeeze past the side on a moto so much as I used to.

It's a Cambodian tradition that is waning. It's been here forever and when I came here it was everywhere. Leave Cambodians alone. It will dissipate quickly now. Some people still throw plenty of tea money aboot for that. When it is gone you will all be talking about it.

I used to love a street party. I always got invited to join on my way through, got to know the nieghbours, got fed n watered, had a dance n a giggle, all for free.
Great tradition, hope they are still happening when I return next year.

Yea, a village tradition is all good in the village. You can judge me for complaining that an entire road is shutdown for this, or when they do it on a National Road or Monivong or something, but it’s illegal in PP now.
A street party could be good as well; on a side street, or on the side of a street.
