I was just invited to a party on Sunday, which was described to me as "this is a party for my grandparents, it's like a birthday, but it is not a birthday".
I was told the whole family was coming together to have the party, which is not an annual thing, but which was like a birthday celebration.
What's this called, and what's it all about?
Celebration for people, that's not a birthday
It's probably a kat ah new (something like a gratitude/give thanks) ceremony. Don't know how to spell it.amirite wrote:I was just invited to a party on Sunday, which was described to me as "this is a party for my grandparents, it's like a birthday, but it is not a birthday".

Like a thanks for the long life and a blessing for a few years more. Very common in the countryside.

How old do you have to be to get one of these parties? Can we throw them for longtime expats at around age 53?

I think it's pronounced more like kat-an. I wouldn't describe it as being like a birthday party. It's a full on monk up and involves the entire family and wider community. Obviously you are expected to put money in, you may get your name written in the wat as a reward. Unless you are close to the family or have a particular interest in local customs, I would avoid.pedros wrote:It's probably a kat ah new (something like a gratitude/give thanks) ceremony. What you're describing sounds like the Ket-y-an (no idea how to spell), where a family sponsors a pagoda by having a party and guests are obligated to join and donate money.slavedog wrote:I think it's pronounced more like kat-an.
