Expats 2.0 vs 1.0
Just off the top of my head, the first one is Pissed Up Phil / Goeman
The third one is KiR
The fourth is PB, as stated. Though he left out the part about sleeping off the hangover on Cavern Barry's cum crusted sofa.
I'm thinking RobW might be the second? Or was he the one who rode some trollop's Hershey-highway inside the Kandal House washroom.

Ooh, very good
No1 was indeed Pissed up Phil and No3 was KiR
You have gotten No4 slightly wrong, it was a different night I had to sleep at DV8, not the night that I mentioned above.
RobW and his Bathroom Antics at Kandal House should have been in that list of mine - but then again should have so many other tales from the darkside ...

Thanks for that ray of sunshine. That reminds me, what happened to you? You upped and left without so much as a goodbye.Violet wrote: The other thing to consider is that y'all are out of the loop now.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Indeed, there are just too many stories. Instead of wasting their time writing silly stories, trying to emulate the Bangkok noir genre, some of these wannabe literary types should look at putting together a compilation of real life vignettes. They would be well advised to read Somerset Maughan's collection of short stories, many of which are set in South East Asia and the Pacific, before they begin.

I think I saw a 3.0 today, stepping out of her chauffeured Range Rover at the Starbucks, probably to go get herself a green tea frappuchino or the like.

Great tales, slavedog, and many still true today.slavedog wrote: ↑Sat Mar 23, 2019 3:42 pmIndeed, there are just too many stories. I like the one about the plantation manager and the bookeeper (-or similar roles, i havn't read it for nearly 50 years now).
- Stuck on a coconut island with the supply ship visiting once a year. The manager carefully organises his annual delivery of his London Times subscription so he can pick up a crisp fresh newspaper every morning to have with his breakfast. Reading every paper on precisely the correct date - exactly 12 months old to the day. That's his "thing". - And at this far far edge of the empire, it is his one threadlike hold to his identity as a civilised Englishman.
Anyway , one time the manager goes out for a month or so on tour of the plantation's outer islands. When he returns the accountant is rum-drunk and the whole year's 'Times subscription is scattered chaotically all around everywhere. Not two pages of the whole year still together in correct chronological order.
So the manager simply, quickly and with complete calm and confidence in the rightness of his action, strikes the accountant stone cold dead.
Cambodia has really helped me relate to some Sumerset Maughan's stories.
...then he smiled again, and slipped away, further on up the stream

You have the ending slightly wrong but worth reading again I'm sure you'd agree.
I just read The Two Worlds of Somerset Maugham by Wilmon Menard.
Menard toured the old F.M.S. and South Seas interviewing the originals of Maugham's characters. Unsurprisingly they were none too happy about how they had been depicted. Compare the rage of Caliban expressed by the expats featured in Off the Rails..
Often Maugham didn't even bother to change their names. Notably that of Sadie Thompson, the prostitute heroine of Rain; and the first printing of The Painted Veil had to be withdrawn and pulped, and identifying names and locations altered.
Maugham may have embroidered them but he didn't make these stories up. Like Graham Greene, he was 'unable to invent'.

I think that I might have to reread Quartered Safe Out Here, by George MacDonald Fraser.

Meanwhile - skipping vaguely back to the origanal topic - Expat 2.0 in its continuing quest to bring first world problems to a third world shithole, thus destroying any sense of adventure in being here, has a few queries about the harshness of life in a developing economy ...
