2019 Tourism Numbers (updated monthly)
Last year I provided monthly updates of the inbound tourism numbers, as provided by the Ministry of Tourism. It was amazing to see the increase in Chinese visitors in 2018 vs 2017, with nearly double the visitors per month compared to the year before. Visitors from other countries seemed to mostly remain the same, with some slightly increasing and some decreasing (including European visitors).
Here was the 2018 thread: 2018 Tourism Numbers Have a look at those graphs and it really shows the changes that are underway.
Will the exponential growth continue this year? It's too early to tell, but in January there was an increase, but not as explosive as last year.

Thanks M, And this is just just the start.
Outbound tourists from China are running at about 160 million/pa now, approx half going locally to HK, Macao, Taiwan. 80 mill going everywhere else.
I remember being surprised back in about 2010 when I heard the Hilton hotel CEO saying they were planning on the basis of 20 mill outbound Chinese by 2020.
An exponential curve is a very scary thing.

...then he smiled again, and slipped away, further on up the stream
Compared to last January it seems normal!

i read somewhere only 38% of all visitors to Cambodia are visiting Siem Reap/Angkor Wat, compared to almost 70% when I first come here, which is a good thing for the whole country, The Chinese are increasing at a large % and we are now seeing more in the FIT market for the Chinese, which is also a good thing, Our business in Siem Reap is increasing at a much slower rate than our Phnom Penh business, Lots of people are now coming into Phnom Penh for business, I am not sure about Sihanoukville, I have been there a few times to start up a business but I never have liked the place.
On a side note, there are lots of businesses struggling to stay afloat in Siem Reap, mainly ones not targeting the Asian market, Asian travelers now make up 75% of all tourist in Cambodia.

January 2018:
Increase in Chinese from previous year: 90.5%
Percentage of all arrivals that are Chinese: 25.7%
January 2019:
Increase in Chinese from previous year: 19.1%
Percentage of all arrivals that are Chinese: 28.2%
So they've taken more of the overall share of arrivals, but their growth has slowed to only 19.1%.
However, their overall share for all of 2018 was 32.6%, so I wouldn't read too much into this one month.
January 2017: 80,000 Chinese
January 2018: 153,000 Chinese
January 2019: 182,000 Chinese

And here is what they tracked for internal arrivals to the regions (perhaps this is hotel data?):
Asia and the Pacific made up 80.6% of arrivals in 2018. The breakdown was:
ASEAN countries: 33.3%
Northeast Asia (China, Japan, Korea, etc): 43.3%
Southeast Asia (non ASEAN): 1.3%
Oceania: 2.5%
And then:
Europe: 13.2% (and this will really piss Vlad off, Israel was counted as Europe)
Americas: 6.0%
Africa: .2%
Middle East: .1%
If Azerbaijan is counted as in Europe then so can Israel!

According to Ctrip the number of passport holders in China is expected to double by 2020, Rising from 10% to 20%. Ctrip is the largest travel agency in China. Bit dated, article. https://skift.com/2018/01/25/ctrip-ceo- ... e-by-2020/
Freedom is not a state. It is an act. It is not some enchanted garden perched high on a distant plateau.. Freedom is a continuous action we all must take, and each generation must do its part to create an even more fair, more just society.-John Lewis
Maybe but someone somewhere thought it was in Europe in 2016.
“The 2016 European Grand Prix (formally known as the 2016 Formula 1 Grand Prix of Europe) was a Formula One motor race that was held on 19 June 2016 at the Baku City Circuit in Baku, Azerbaijan.”
