Self imposed exile yes, but would you be prepared to
Oppose in this “democracy “ and then rot in a Cambodian prison?
The question isn't really what I would be prepared to do. How about what other activists and opposition leaders have been prepared for, such as Nelson Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi, or even those in Cambodia, like Kem Sohka, that have not left the country.
The problem is that when he is well received, Rainsy will come into Cambodia. He will be here, speak about some change, and even have family dinner with the PM. But then whenever an issue arises, he's on the first business class flight out, using his French passport to take vacations around the world and live in Paris.
As someone that wants to be the champion of the people, and speaks out against the inequality and corruption in Cambodia, to me, he loses all of his credit when he posts about his "exile from Cambodia", and then a week later posts images on social media on vacation on a yacht (as he did one week after leaving Cambodia the last time).
He's now abroad mustering support from diaspora that do not live in Cambodia nor fully understand the situation here, and campaigning for public and international support that hurts the average Cambodia people.
His current strategy is to gain power through the West economically hurting Cambodia so much that the citizens stand up and demand a change in government, where he'll swoop in and promise to bring it back to the level it was before he actively worked to damage it.
What a great guy.
