It looks like by next year we could have a mobile 5G network here:

It sounds super cool and tempting, downloading movies in seconds. But given the concerns, will you use it?

Depends what you're using it for at the end of the day.

If you're just using it for browsing facebook and pirating movies then sure knock yourself out.

Anything remotely sensitive should be PGP encrypted anyway.

Would I want to run government infrastructure or emergency alerting systems (aka nuclear explosion/pandemic has occured please stay indoors and remain calm) Hell no!

I'm not sure I'd even trust it for most IoT devices but then again it depends on what relationship the countries government has with China from the sounds of it Cambodia and China are fairly close.

I don't know why everyone is so uptight about Huawei.

All major manufacturers of telecom exchanges and equipment have intercept facilities in their equipment. It allows the security forces to monitor any suspicious people.

The scare about 5G is that it allows interaction between "smart" gadgets. There is the paranoia that the network could be used to shut down utility companies who use smart equipment for maintenance work etc. I don't think anyone would spend time listening to moaning ex pats on their phones after a night out and what secrets does Cambodia have to hide?

My downer with "Who Are We" is that they ripped off Ericsson and Nokia in the design of their equipment. Absolutely no difference between the Ericsson AXE10 exchange and Huawei's switch. Same coding, same software, same data fill procedures. They simply reverse engineered everything with the protection of the PRC government from law suits for copyright infringements.

Cambodia will not have to pay up front, Huawei will simply build the infrastructure with Chinese labour and equipment and suck the Cambodian people and Government dry over the following years.

HUAWEI have been involved in western companies (3Com for one) since the mid 90s and set up networks in many western countries.

It’s just a load of nonsense from Trumpy.

Better safe than sorry. Besides the Chinese are well on the way to world domination. Why help speed the process?

Old 2, 3 and 4G equipment are not the issue. It is an accepted fact that Huawei reverse engineered Ericsson and Nokia equipment. 5G offers the opportunity for remote access to almost any smart equipment connected into it. I worked on Huawei exchanges back in 2003/4 as they were merely copies of the Ericsson AXE10. I was offered a job teaching switch engineering in China at Huawei but knew that once they had sucked my knowledge out it was "goodnight Vienna".

At present, there are no 5G networks so no issues to worry about. Just remember what all security people are told. If what you are saying or sending is confidential and liable to get you into trouble...don't send it. Any telecommunication network can be accessed and information intercepted by others.

The Chinese are infamous for having back doors into their equipment. The majority of security cameras are made in China (Shenzhen) and the manufacturers have back door access to these cameras. I was quite surprised to find my own home equipment accessible through the manufacturers server but it was easy enough to turn off the access codes.

I’ll read your post in the morning. Too drunk.

However, they reverse engineered telephone PBX switch machines way back when.

Westerner companies did the same to Japanese products - cars, motorbikes etc.

That will teach you to stick to champagne, no hangover. :!:

Any switch engineer would shoot you for associating the AXE10 (or AXE810) with a PBX. That's like comparing a Honda VFR800F to a Honda Cub.

Question: how will metfone, a Vietnamese network, and Opennet (also Vietnamese) be affected?
